How I Painted - Castlevania - Full PDF Breakdown

Hey!

Hope you've been well! Here's the full breakdown of the Castlevania piece I created for Cook and Becker! This PDF(attached to this post, as well as viewable on here) covers everything from how I approach the sketch to compositional shape breakdown and finally how I manage so many aspects of an illustration and bring them to render.

This piece took me around a month's worth of work to complete, but this was spread out over 6 months - which is crazy. You may remember I mentioned, back when I did the Final Fantasy 6 piece, that I was denied the option of working on Final Fantasy 6 so I decided to do it here on Patreon - well, this was my second choice!

I hope that this walkthrough is helpful for you, if you have any questions feel free to leave them below!

Thanks as always for your support, it means a lot to me, especially now that I have my second baby boy here in the world! I really appreciate what you all do for me!

Dave

ditto - I honestly joined Dave's Patreon to get the high res for this so I can print it for my office. Is there any way we can get Dave's attention?

Fadi Bahhady

Yeah I would love to have this to print as well.

Douglas Nagle

Noticed this is sold out now, is there anywhere we can find the high res to print our own?

Jeremy Umlah

Just realized how much Dracula looks like Hugh Jackman

Hi Dave! New patron (and first time Patron user) after I saw your FF6 piece. Incredibly impressive stuff and I really appreciate the level of detail you provide for your process. I have one question. On one of the Simon rendering slides you mention setting your watercolor brush to 30-60%. Is that opacity? And when you mention using the same brush earlier for the line work, what was the percentage it was set at? Thank you so much!

Nick Sermuksnis

I don't think so. I believe it is a private commission!

Wassim

This art is AMAZING... is this available for download?

Rodolfo Canato

Thanks Dave!

Alfred Manzano

Thanks! And yes, Christopher is right, I use it to individually adjust colors in the characters, it's really great for that.

David Rapoza

Thanks Christopher! I just tried this filter out and Holy Shit..... life changer haha

Alfred Manzano

It allows you to edit individual colours, so you can change the reds in your picture to be blue as an example... kinda like when you change the hue slider and your picture goes all whacky colours, but for single colours at a time, and with precision. So Dave might use it only to tweak the colour of the red armour for Simon. At least, if I remember correctly!

Christopher

congrats on the baby man! Thanks for sharing all this. I was surprised that you begin rendering over your line layer, I always rendered below my lines then use another later after to brush out my lines, I'm definitely gonna try your approach. also question, if anyone can answer. what is "Selective color" adjustment???

Alfred Manzano

awesome...defo some good tips. going to re-read it all to make it sink in
