Making Comics pt.1 - Steve Lichman

Watch the video here!

Hey!

This is a long time coming - I've been getting questions from a lot of you during the Q&A's about how I approach working on my comic stuff, so I wanted to start a series of talking through the process - part 1 being a sort of introduction to my process via Steve Lichman

Basically, I want this to be a starting point and from here you can feel free to post comments on here and I'll address things as they come in future video installments. I plan on sharing the process of working on the comic I did for Destiny - you can read the comic here.

Anyway, I hope that this helps as an introduction -  comics are super time intensive projects and a ton of work and prep goes into working on something like this, so please leave your questions here!

Thanks as always for your support!

Dave

Thanks Dave! have a comics question for your next video. When you post comics and art with screentones online is there a specific file type you export it as from photoshop and clip? I notice when I upload things sometimes depending on what size or resolution I export it as they look goofy and the tones get messed up and look like trash. Thanks for all these tutorials you make. I've learned a ton.

Thank you for the tips and discussing comic composition. It had me rolling that you had to pick these pages to discuss it. 🤣🐕

Well damn, I've been drawing everything underneath the bubbles all this time when I could've just been galaxy brained and cover stuff up 🤡 Thanks for the tips Dave! Overthinking the structure of the script kept me from writing for the longest time and seeing it simplified and approachable gave me a boost of confidence! Can't wait for more of that cream

A lot of super helpful tips, thank you! You giving advice while talking about "munchin' on some chow" killed me

Thanks for this! Loving all the quality info you've been dropping.

This is awesome! I've been trying to work on more interesting compositions and layouts in comic pages so really looking forward to your process on the Destiny comic! I'm curious for your original comics like Steve Lichman, do you do a lot of preliminary concept work for new characters and environments? Or do you do a lot of designing on the fly? I've seen your concepts for the basketball manga and just wondering if you do a lot of planning like that often!

this is great Dave, I was looking for something like this as I plan to start my own comics !

What's your preferred system for keeping all the colors consistent with characters? Do you have a Swatch file or just color pick from old pages?

David Tenorio

Appreciate this so much! I'm in the process of trying to transition my art into comics and its great to hear someone talk about their creative process a bit more. Look forward to more.
