The Basics - Grayscale to Color + Brushes

Watch the video here! - or download the video attached to this post!

Hey!

Here's the latest video tutorial, in this I walk you through the very basics of how I used this approach to create paintings like the Super Metroid piece. I also included the brushes attached to this post so that you can follow along if you like. This is a relatively simple approach and just takes some practice to get the hang of, but once you got it down it's a very quick process as far as bringing your illustrations together.

Hope this is helpful to you! Please let me know if you have any further questions about the process here and I will try and address them best I can.

Thanks as always for your support!

Dave

The Basics - Grayscale to Color + Brushes

Thank you so much for this grayscale tutorial! Is this the technique you used to make the TMNT drawing a while ago?

Hi Dave! Thank you for the inspiration! :) After your video I hade to make some textured brushes myself. :D If you'd like to try them just let me know and I'll send you a free copy. https://www.artstation.com/a/3200411

Thank you so much for this Dave, it's extremely helpful! I tend to over-complicate my process and always have to take steps back to fix stuff I screwed up, so this step-by-step patient approach makes me feel a bit more confident about my choices. I'm really grateful, and can't wait to see more from you!

Uwaah, this is super helpful! I'm hoping to use it to jumpstart my painting process and avoid the pitfalls you mentioned. I fall into them a lot. I dunno if you'll be covering anything on the Castlevania piece you did, but any thoughts or perspectives you had going into it would be really cool to hear sometime!

Appreciate it Dave, I think I'll give the tablet a go.

Not sure what ipad you have, but if it's a pro I'd get procreate - most all of these tutorials on here will work similarly in procreate. That being said, maybe try one of Wacom's entry level cintiq type tablets if you also have a laptop to attach it to.

What's a good starter tablet to use? I was hoping to use Photoshop on my iPad but it's really limited.

BobCiosain

thanks for sharing Dave! Very helpful. This video I believe answers my previous question too about merging the flats with the line layer then painting over it. I will start implementing that in my own work. Blessings to your meatballs as well :D

Thank you for making this! I love seeing different possible approaches.

I love you too Dave

Lagarok (Ohletob)

a question Dave, for brush control and small details do you use the Click function or mode control? Thanks

Marcello Iozzoli

Super helpful Dave, thanks a ton!

Cameron Skinner

Oh my God, thank you, I was hoping they'd do that

Hey Dave! I noticed you updated to the new photoshop! In the new version of photoshop you can go to View -> Flip Horizontal which will flip the viewport instead of flipping the actual image. I find this better especially for bigger files/pieces because it doesn't get bogged down like it would flipping the old way! 😉

Conon Kudo

Thank you for taking the time to make this while also taking care of your latest meatball~!
