The Walking Dead - Mural Breakdown // Video w/Commentary

Hey!

Hope you're all well! First of all, I want to thank you for the huge amount of replies I got to the message I sent out to you all. I read every response, I couldn't thank you enough for the sheer amount of relief you all brought me, the stress was getting to me for sure this past month so I really appreciate it - I also address this in the video!

I wanted to give you a breakdown of what I did in order to create this giant Walking Dead cover mural - I also attached some high res of the files to this post so you could see the covers in more detail. This was a massive undertaking for me and I was given 2 weeks to complete the entirety of the 6 cover mural - it was really intense to get these completed in time, so I wanted to share my experience with how I managed my time and what I expected of the final.

Thanks as always for your continued support, I'll post again shortly!

Dave

I second this, and set this as an Action and set a function key(mine's on F6 for contract and F8 for expand) to make the workflow smoother!

Hey Dave, sooo for tight selections I use the pen tool in PS to create exact paths of the character/object/whatever right click -->convert path to selection ---> fill-->profit. It's in general faster than the back and forth cleanup, IMO. Additionally, I've just made a manual outline with a hard round (as if a digital micron pen or something) on a new layer and then selected outside of it with the magic wand tool as you have been doing.

2 weeks!! Incredible!

Thanks for sharing Dave! 2 weeks is insane for this commission.

To quickly select lineart I usually use the new Object Selection Tool (W). It uses AI so it can be kinda hit or miss and you'll still need to make some manual adjustments later on but I find it to be a bit more reliable than the magic wand.

Hey Dave thank you for sharing the video. Here is a tip for adjusting the selection, once you have selected the areas go to Select > Modify > Contract. I usually choose 1px. Hopefully that helps! Let me know if you have any question.

I can't phatom enough , how's Dave pumping out these super rendered pieces one after another in a short span of time. Truly some superpowers are involved

Re: Flats under lineart selection and messy edges - I think the way you're going about it is really the only way. I can't think of any other process for it. Even with a crisp brush you'll still have to clean up edges and adjust feathering.

Santa mode didn't disappoint. <3

I'm just about to sit down and watch this, and I really can't wait to see the Christmas Mode part of the tutorial. It's something I've been struggling with for a long time now.

Dave... this is immense. Very cool... you're in the flow for sure. x

We are all here because we love your stuff and we want to support you, but in order to do so we need Dave to be healthy and be well, hope the worst are behind you and also my deepest condolences. As for the tip, what I saw as a tip from colourist that said that it's a good idea to keep your flats in the middle of the lines to avoid bleeding. I guess you could try shrinking the selection by a few pixels and see if that helps. Personally I do these selections manually, it's not a fast process but I don't have to do any clean-up afterwards.

THANK U MR DAVE!!

Thank you Dave! I'm going through a really rough time right now and your posts always give me the motivation to improve in my own work. Keep it up!
