The Basics - How I Use Reference

Watch the video here!

Hey!

Hope you're doing well! Today I wanted to share with you my process of using reference in my illustrations - specifically how I would use them in a Magic The Gathering card. In the video I walkthrough my tools - lights, figures, skulls, etc - as well as my process of setting up the lights and simply using my phone camera to take reference to hopefully compliment my painting. All of this process is done during the sketch phase of the card and will be used throughout the final illustration(for the purpose of this video I focus on the sketch submission).

The brushes I used in the video are attached to this post!

pose-able figure is from TBLeague

Anatomy figures are from 3D Total & Anatomy Tools(I prefer 3D Total)

Lights are from Adorama - they're the Aputure MC RGBWW Mini LED lights

all of the other skulls and animal heads can be found on ebay pretty easily.

I hope that this video is helpful! Please let me know if you have any questions or comments for what you'd like me to dig a bit deeper on or to clarify.

Thanks as always for your support!

Dave

"This guy does a thing in a world where stuff happens" I need to hear that in a trailer voice — "This summer... this guy, does a thing, in a world — Where Stuff Happens"

Moth Dweller

Hey Dave, you talked there about using 3D. Even tho i know how to use it and how to sculpt, i still prefer sometimes to take pictures in the real world. For me is faster and i will still have the texture and materials of the thing that i took the picture.

Thanks for the video Dave, really insightful and great to see your process. While watching I wondered if you have go-to sources for armour and weapons references?

Lee Marshall
