Implying Detail w/Inks Step by Step + Timelapse

Watch it here!

Hey!

Hope you're well! Been working on a few different pieces back and forth this month, I've been trying to make some progress on the comic as well and since I know a few of you wanted to hear how I imply those small ornate details - I figured this would be a nice approach to share.

This process translates pretty similarly to my painting style, but I think when I use this approach in my inking style it is distilled even further to just the important bits of detail that need to be rendered out in order to sell the idea of the form I'm trying to get across.

The video covers an example in the first half showing step by step process - the second half shows the timelapse of the execution of the approach in a panel that is fully detailed.

The brushes I used are attached to this post!

Thanks as always for your support!

Dave

Thank you! I just use a normal layer when painting in the highlights

David Rapoza

Nice work. It was very interesting. What mode do you use for creating highlights Dave?

Nathan

cool, helpful video, thanks dave

Hey man I'd love to hear about your thoughts/tips for quickly establishing facial expressions in comics!

I think having multiple projects at the same time is definitely possible if you have discipline and time management skills to do it. Look at Brandon Sanderson he works at multiple books at the same time and is consistent with it for years. I think doing it by chapters is good idea. Maybe starveil is your main project until you finish chapter and then you move to doing chapter of Steve or fuck you and then rotate between them. Or since you get easily bored by doing same things maybe 1 chapter of comics and then you do big painting or two and then back to the comic.

Man that's a mood, I saw his stuff very early on as well. And same here, it's still one of my favorite blending brushes. I try to emulate it in every software I tackle because it's just so versatile and simple to use.

Damn, this takes me back. Stjepan was one of my early-ish digital art idols. I'm pretty sure I still have his signature Photoshop CS3 blender somewhere. Looks like he's doing well for himself on Patreon. Nice.

thanks Dave that was awesome.

Thank you so much for a great vid Dave! I always get too focused on the details, so this is a real damn gem of an insight for me. I think Stjepan Šejić's approach to publishing multiple projects at the same is pretty cool. Dude's absolutely bonkers when it comes to switching between his stories. He hits the update milestones for projects he "mains" at the moment while having at least 3-4 other stories in works, that get updated in the meantime. People seem to really enjoy this system and from what I'm seeing his Patreon is doing really well as a place for sharing those. It's basically where the update batches of everything go first before being released on other platforms. I think in a way it does give off the feeling of being subscribed to a zine, since there's a pretty broad variety of themes and genres in his work. He was the first artist who came to my mind that does something adjacent to what you'd like to do with your own stuff, so I figured I'd share! Hope it comes in handy, can't wait to see your upcoming comics man, stay fresh and creamy <3

Great topic, thanks for this!
