Yu Yu Hakusho - progress + process

Hey!

Hope you're well! Here is the current progress on the Yu Yu Hakusho piece I've been working on - this one was started so that I could try and use the same approach I had used previously in the Super Metroid piece but with a slight alteration in the initial drawing phase(something that I hoped would work!).

I'm very happy with how quick this approach is for me - instead of using my lines/values as multiply layers like I did with the Super Metroid painting - which ended up taking me a long time to paint over - I'm instead using the "~" key set to my tourbox controller for easy access(you could also remap shortcuts on your keyboard to make it easier to hit in photoshop) to paint in black at varying levels of flow/opacity and erasing out(rather than using white as the eraser like I've done in the past) using the "~" key. This makes it possible for me to lock the value layer when it's done and very simply paint over those value marks and make it instantly blend into my under coloring.

My apologies if this is all confusing to follow, I'll do a video on this approach shortly, but I'm excited about it and wanted to share!

Thanks as always for your support! The whole team will be on this one and it shouldn't take much longer now.

Dave

I don't get this issue anymore - all my command keys would get stuck in ps - it's a known glitch in ps - that's why I started using that tourbox controller, that solved sticky keys for me

David Rapoza

Thanks for that! I do remember something like this from another workflow but I'll definitely offer this up as an alternative

I get this also sometimes... definitely a PS glitch. Might occasionally be worth resetting the PS Preferences.

Here's the process I go through to extract a tonal black and white drawing from a flattened layer: https://www.loom.com/share/15b6d99bfe28422daca794d071b74759

Dave, sometimes when I use the tilde key to erase, it gets stuck as an eraser. Have you had this same issue? I am on Windows and not Mac.

Nice workflow Dave. I have a cool process you can use also if you wanted to extract out the values from the b+w drawing to just leave the drawing on transparent should you have used the ‘on white’ approach. An extra step and you may know it anyway but will post here for you to check... Also, love the ever-so-subtle expressions on the characters. Gives a real feel for their attitudes.

haha, they're all just slight alterations on the same general approach in hopes of streamlining things and getting a bit faster with each approach.

David Rapoza

Man, how many approaches do you have? Lol
