Hey!
Hope you're well! I wanted to share the process I used for this quick Rei study - I'm more or less playing with the idea of using the b&w approach for finished paintings with this one, I was hopeful that I could pull off something loose but finished but in the end it just fell more toward the loose and whatever side haha. That being said, I thought I would share this as I am trying to find what I like best about this approach by going through a few different attempts at levels of finish in the b&w/levels of tightness in the initial drawing.
My conclusion after a few different processes is that I will retain a good amount of white during this sketch stage using only b&w, focusing on the basic shadows and lighting without going full in on the mid tone rendering. I think that the mid tones end up making everything look a little too dirty and I'd rather have things read as a true solid color from the fills beneath.
Mostly likely I will adapt what I did on the Super Metroid piece and bring in what I've learned from that Yu Yu Hakusho painting and kinda combine them while maintaining an overall tight drawing. This should allow me to wrap up that FF7 piece, which is really what these studies have been about - the Cloud painting was eating too much time without so much reward so I needed to find a better solution that suits my style/approach.
Anyway, I will do a subsequent post with this one showing the final sketch painting and another style attempt as well - sharing basic stages of the pieces.
Thanks as always for your support!
