February Q&A - Leave your questions here!
Added 2022-02-26 02:41:45 +0000 UTCHey!
Hope you're healthy and bulked up! I know this is last minute, but I wanted to make sure that everybody was in good health here before posting this up! My wife has been sick for a month now and the rest of us have been on and off fighting colds and covid and who knows what. All that to say, it's time for the February q&a!
That means you get a couple days to toss out some questions, you can ask anything you like, questions about why I've gained a healthy amount of weight in such a short amount of time since the last time I lost a healthy amount of weight, or why I paint so many goblins despite their lack of popularity or simply questions about technique and freelance.
Looking forward to getting back into these, we'll have the targeted one that we mentioned before for the next q&a, but get your questions in now and we'll talk to you soon!
Thanks as always for your support!

Hey Dave and Kim. Do you have any advice for mentorships? I've tried reaching out to people for about 2 years with no luck. I find paid mentorships (rarely) and if I do they are almost always full or too expensive (I have no problem paying). I'm currently in a few different art discord channels but the community thing isn't really for me. Thanks.

2022-02-28 14:14:56 +0000 UTCHey Team Muscle, Dave once said "When I finish painting a character and I don't want to fight them or fuck them, I start over." Can you expand on this? Also wondering if you have tips for applying your new process to more illustrative work keeping in mind backgrounds and dramatic lighting. Thanks, and hope you're all feeling better

2022-02-27 23:52:38 +0000 UTCHey man! Sorry to hear that you and your family are battling sickness. I hope you are all doing okay and get better soon. I love watching you work in greyscale. I've recently picked up drawing again but I can't seem to get over the hump of understanding light and shadow on forms to make my work really come to life. Do you have any suggestions for how to practice rendering forms for the face and body? I have a good connection between my hand and my eye, but I can't seem to make my forms look more 3-dimensional when drawing characters. Should I practice more contour drawings at different angles? Or should I practice simple primitives over and over? My brain is having a hard time moving onto more complex forms. Thanks for all your amazing help and for the badass work you produce!

2022-02-27 23:45:17 +0000 UTCWhat's going on Dave and Kim. Dave, I saw that your second Cintiq is in the process of shitting its pants, have you considered other brands or going back to your Intuos? Now that I'm getting older and am developing a level of introspection, I find myself thinking about the quality of life for children and what it's like now. I haven't made eye contact with a woman in a year, so I won't be having children, but do you guys have any insight on your childhoods vs that of your children? How do you view that. Was being a 90's kid overrated, or is knowing what an N-Gage is actually cool. Thanks and stay well.

2022-02-27 20:48:47 +0000 UTCDo you play video games? If yes, what are some of your favorites, current and old. Is there a video game or experience you had that made you want to become an artist?

2022-02-27 18:35:01 +0000 UTCHola Dave y Kim!! It's nice to hear that you guys are recovering and doing better 💪. 1st question for Kim, what is her favorite song to sing? Do you sing to your children?? Or sing together with them? You guys should watch Owl Jolson together!! The old cartoon where an owl was banned from singing Jazz🤣 2nd question is for The Dave, When you did the Poster for Logan/Terminator how do you achieve the Likeness of each character in the movie? I am sure they gave you a bunch of photo for reference, but I just can't imagine having to draw them from scratch in a tight deadline, especially the terminator one... Do you do a composite of each character in Photoshop and trace from there and paint over them like how Drew Struzan did ? Thank you so much you guys!! Keep it 55th Street!!!

2022-02-27 17:33:17 +0000 UTCHey Dave and Kim, can you tell how the print selling thing is turning out for you? Is it comparable to client work in terms of pay? Your tweets seem to gain crazy amount of attention, I wonder how many people are actually buying prints. I've never done these myself so I'm wondering. Thanks

2022-02-26 18:32:13 +0000 UTCHI guys, hope you're doing well. So everytime I finish a huge artwork I feel like my brain just shutts off and I feel myself running out of steam, even if have like a ton of other pieces to work on next, how to overcome this feeling and push trough?

2022-02-26 13:33:48 +0000 UTCHi Dave and Kim! Hope it's gonna go uphill for you soon, sounds like a tough time! If you haven't talked about it too much yet I'd love to hear you go into what goes on around the work itself. Like what needs to happen before you start painting and what things should be in place to not get screwed over. What do you say to them after the initial email? I always feel super unconfident when someone gets back to me after I've sent them my portfolio. I've had it happen that after I name my rates they just don't write back. Is there a procedure or an order in which to talk about things? Like not mention right away that you don't sell all the rights to the work or something? Things like that. I feel like always getting it wrong there. :D Thank you so much! All the best

2022-02-26 13:11:48 +0000 UTCHey Dave, and errbody. How do you feel about digital painting on mobile setups? Like, on your phone?

2022-02-26 11:29:42 +0000 UTCHello Dave and Kim, sending you rays of health! Ran into an issue with brushes in Kirby's tutorial and Chrono Trigger. Why does the General brush and others have a line in the middle? I guess that it's in the Double brush. Therefore, I would like to see the settings, maybe something goes astray.

2022-02-26 10:46:53 +0000 UTCHeyo, glad you're back and hope you're well-recovered by the time of recording! Just wanted to quickly ask about variant cover jobs: Since most variant covers for comics are distributed by individual comic retailers, if I wanted to do some as a freelance gig, should I reach out to said retailers, is there a middle man or do I keep my head low and wait until they stumble over my work on socials and have them bring me on board? What was your process of doing variant covers like? I've been excited to take that next step in my career but don't know the angle in which to get started haha. Hope all else is well and good luck on finalising that Chrono Trigger piece!

2022-02-26 09:31:06 +0000 UTCHey Dave Wanted to know if you could post a process video for one of the marvel covers you've done or currently are doing? Thanks, loving all the juiciness on your patreon.

2022-02-26 07:44:15 +0000 UTCG'day peepholes, David, can you share how you created your animations for SV? A walkthrough/breakdown video of that would be really cool to see. Get well soon!

2022-02-26 06:16:28 +0000 UTCHey Dave and Kim! First off: Dave, I want to congratulate you on your new dad bod. I haven't been able to find your thirst traps on Twitter, but I'm sure you've got hefty handfuls of winter chub in all the right places. Nice. As for an art question, lately I've been struggling a lot with style, in the sense that my work looks dumb and bad compared to everyone I follow on Instagram. Can either of you recommend a good approach to internalize better shape language? Also, I find that I forget most of what I copy. I've been doing anatomy breakdowns where I follow these steps: - draw a simplified lay-in from reference - then correct the proportions by drawing over the photo - then add the major contour variations and muscle shapes on top - then try to reproduce the whole thing from memory - then bring back the ref and add corrections on top of the memory drawing Should I keep grinding out these studies until I can draw nude hotties, or is there a better way? It's great you're bringing back the Q&As. Stay healthy, guys!

2022-02-26 04:55:53 +0000 UTCHi Dave and Kim, Thanks for doing this and hope you're all well! I draw every day and I'm trying to get better at controlling values, without letting them get out of hand. Do you think its better to practice putting down lights and shadows and then adding midtones like some oil painters teach, or doing watercolor washes gradually darker like how you have been doing, or start from grey paper and add darks and lights? Maybe its preference, but if you have thoughts on the merits of the best order to put down values when practicing as a beginner/intermediate digital painting, id love to know! Thanks again!

2022-02-26 04:02:30 +0000 UTCHey Dave, was wondering how to keep after it and stay fit, succulent and luscious while sick, so my neighbors still respect me if I ever get COVID. Is your weight gain part of a bulking plan? Should I draw with both arms so one doesn’t get more jacked than the other? Thank you, I’m excited for the next goblin.

2022-02-26 03:58:10 +0000 UTCHey dude, i hope everything gets better for you and your family soon, my question is about the watercolor brush setup on clip, like how you set it up, and the other one is how to study, or what to study as an intermediate "guy that draws and paints digitally"
