The Basics - Current Process

Hey!

Figured I'd post this isolated as well - here is The Basics video without the Pig Man video attached, should cut down on the amount of time watching!

Thanks as always for your support!

Hey Dave. Quick question, what was the shortcut you used to turn the brush you're using into an eraser without actually using the eraser? I think you mentioned it but was hard to hear. Thanks! EDIT: Nevermind, found it from an older video. It's the "~" key.

Thank you! I hadn't been feathering the selections up until recently but it's helped me quite a bit with the harsh fills I used to get.

David Rapoza

I would do a similar approach but I'd change up the brushes I used - they'd end up being something closer to what I'm doing on the latest Pilot Concept I posted up - lots of softer brushes to convey a bit more realism

This was dope Dave! I been watching every single video and everytime I pick up atleast one new trick. This time I never realized you were feathering your selection during the fills, I gotta try that out. also I have been having that issue you mentioned of having so many pencil lines that I have to erase later, Definitely gotta work on my brush choices for things

Awesome to have a basics tutorial, I’ve been trying to put aside time to watch the longer tuts so this is a perfect way to get started. Bless you Dave!!

Hey Dave. Loving what you give us of value and great help with these things. I wonder, however, if this approach that you've found for your more recent pieces, also would apply to a piece with the same amount of heavy detail as your TMNT pieces or Orc illustration you did a tutorial on some years back? Or if that would demand a different kind of approach still? Do you still do pieces with that amount of detail?

Ric Bülow

Thanks! I think I'll try something simple and cartoony like this one and see if I can get a handle on this process.

Awesome! Thanks a lot Dave!

Yes, it's meant to work the same way masking out an area of traditional painting would work, just restricting the working area to the fill layer - you could always do a fill and then lock the fill and do everything I do after that on one layer. Let me know if you have any other questions!

David Rapoza

Absolutely, everything on this Patreon is meant to be used in your regular workflow, hope it helps!

David Rapoza

Thank you! I'd love to do some procreate videos, I just need to find a way to love it

David Rapoza

Is it because it stays within the original selection for the fill layer?

Chris Nixon

Hey Dave, I was wondering why you made the highlight layer a clipping mask rather than a regular layer. Sorry if it's a basic question. I've been painting traditionally for years, but I'm newer to digital painting, so I'm still figuring some things out. Thanks for the tutorials. I'm learning a lot.

Chris Nixon

hello, im fairly new subscriber, is it okay to use the brushes in commission or any other paid works?

Dhiar Syahputra

I’d legit double my patreon sub if you doubled the tuts and did procreate versions… I’m tired of being stuck at a desk man. I want to draw at lunch. On the plane. At the studio when I’m waiting around etc. Not asking for a change in your process. Just a request as a professional services provider (art education). I absolutely love what you’re doing here man. You’re a freakin open book and this is my #1 recommended patreon for people pursuing art - especially dads that just love art on the side and want to pass it along to our kids. Thanks for this one. Stoked to watch long version. 20 min version is as always, inspiring. Thanks Dave.
