Hope you're well! Please feel free to leave whatever questions you like below so we can answer them on this Thursday's Q&A stream! These can be professional, personal, follow ups from previous posts, clarification, or even curiosities about my intense emotional eating habits that cripple my daily routine into a sluggish pace that I struggle to escape to no avail.
Anything really!
Thanks for your support! More art updates coming tonight.

2022-05-20 03:57:16 +0000 UTCOne more question what do you think of a.I. art and how it’s gonna impact our industry? The stuff that is circulating around ig is unreal, at this point is concept art just going to be something someone can click a button and get? I know there are copyright issues but I imagine that will be sorted out. I don’t know what will be worse my art career being ruined by a robot or catching my wife with a robot, both seem inevitable at this point.

2022-05-19 21:49:51 +0000 UTCHello Dave, Hello Kim. Thank you for the review of my portfolio last time, I feel I learned a lot from the words of Dave and Dan. I feel like you didn't need it, but Dave, have you ever got the service of an agent or illustration agency for gaining gigs during your career? I never explored this existing part of the illustration industry, so I was wondering how it works, especially in u.s. Another question could be: what is your thought process in choosing a palette/a color while painting? (sorry maybe you allready spoke about this in other videos or post, but i'm fairly new on your patreon :) )

2022-05-19 10:02:24 +0000 UTCHey Dave and Kim I actually have 2 questions. All my main works has been full colored character illustrations, kinda aiming to get to that Magic The Gathering quality, it is also where I gain most of my likes and followers, even though it’s not that much, but every now and then I like to make a manga-like illustration, but I never really get anything from those. Even though it is something that I like to do, would it be better for my portfolio if I stop posting these manga-like stuff? As for my second question, since I didn’t get chosen for a portfolio review, would you mind if I posted again in the discord or that would be necessary for the next one? Thank you and I hope you’re both doing well!

2022-05-18 23:43:47 +0000 UTC2 questions so ill be quick - what would you recommend for figure drawing? (something other than Proko please). And do you have recommendations for any mentors or tutors? (I dont mind paying). I've tried a few large art discords and they haven't really been helpful, the group thing isn't for me. Thanks, the Ghost Rider sketch you did was wild btw.

2022-05-18 20:05:42 +0000 UTCHey Dave! Hope all is well. I am curious about your process when dealing with non-realistic elements like the gauntlets and helmet in your recent Pilot Concept character. The armor is very weathered and other-worldly looking, and everything has a round/mechanical construction which really grounds the character. Curious to hear about your process when designing things like this. Is it more about understanding silhouette from a fixed angle? Or is it more about taking from reference and building simple shapes into more complex ones as you go? Thanks for always taking the time to answer our questions and talk about your professional experiences. Your help has been invaluable in so many ways. Best to you and your family! :D

2022-05-16 19:26:40 +0000 UTCAlright got another one for you: How do you think supply and demand applies to character design work these days? I see you and dan recommending that us that are primarily focused on character design should double down on that strength but when I look around at other artists I see there is a lot of competition for these gigs, and these little piggies are freaking good. So how can we differentiate ourselves in a overcrowded marketplace? Is it about showing lots of value to a client in terms of doing breakdowns, poses, movements of the characters..etc? Is it about marketing ourselves better by putting out things that are more viral ( like dan mentioned the redesigns of the Pokemon)? Is it just me or is this this pig pen just little overcrowded..

2022-05-16 14:11:47 +0000 UTCHey Dave and Kim. First of all thanks for hosting this wonderful Patreon, It’s having a positive impact on my life worth much more the 5 bucks. Onto my question: I generally really love art, but I don’t know what I want to do with it or what I want to get out of it. I’m mostly doing studies, or drawing portraits or doodling random heads in my sketchbook. What is something I could do to help me find out what I want with this? For context: art is right now more a hobby for me. I’m in my thirties and have another career going which is going well and isn’t completely terrible. I want art to become more though, I just don’t know what. I don’t have loads of time left in my day-to-day so in the interest of time I go back to what I’m used to drawing by default, which is probably not a good idea. Bonus question: i realise we’re in a pig pen but in an effort to escape the pig life: do you have any good quick recipes that don’t destroy your health? I hate cooking but have to survive. Have good pig dreams, Tim

2022-05-15 17:30:21 +0000 UTCHi Dave I wanted to ask how many hours each day did you spend working versus studying before your kids came along? You once said that you spent 2 hours painting still life and then 2 hours of anatomy. Over what period of time? And overall did you also study other things like perspective, color theory, composition? Sometimes I get overwhelmed with the amount of basics and I think I either have trouble scheduling my time or I worry about it too much. If you could say how you did it in a day for example I would appreciate it. Thank you and best regards to you and your family!

2022-05-15 15:25:24 +0000 UTCHi Dave, appreciate these! Sorry if this has been asked previously, first time joining. My question is regarding something you said in the recent portfolio review session, you stated that it’s good to study at least an hour (or more) a day to grow your skills. How did you, or how would recommend doing quality, meaningful studies? What does a typical “hour” of studying look like? Thanks again! Look forward to your next portfolio review!

2022-05-15 04:36:36 +0000 UTCHow did your short animation project help you land jobs if any? In a portfolio of concept art how can you make sure you are showing the right information that a 3d modeler will need to model your drawing without having 3d experience modelling? I know sometimes concept artists have awesome portfolios but they aren't practical for a 3d modeler so how do you avoid this? I recently feel like I've hit a ceiling on the jobs that Im able to get and am turning my attention to personal projects in order to get me to that next level of work, as I literally sent 100s of emails out and have gotten only rejections recently for TTRPG or board game projects. This seems to be a clue that I gotta make something that gets more eyes on me. Can you rant a little about how personal projects have helped you or your thoughts on seeing others like dan luvisi, Marko or others creating their own thing and how it separated them from the legion of other general illustrators. P.S. Id love to interview you and dan on my podcast sometime if youre up for it. Also my portfolio is in the discord.

2022-05-14 17:02:25 +0000 UTCHey Dave got a few questions for you: I turned my neighbour's skull into a goblet like you mentioned, just not sure what to do with this detective that keeps showing up at my door any thoughts would be helpful.

2022-05-14 14:47:14 +0000 UTCAfter so many years of drawing/illustration what are your tricks to stay interested/engaged with your work? Do you ever get the itch to do something completely different? Or do ever think you’ll stop drawing and become a 3d sculpture, carpenter, train conductor or something?

2022-05-14 06:19:18 +0000 UTCHello Dave and Kim, do you have any advice for people like me who wants to study art by themselves, how do I plan out the things I need to study? do you have any suggestions on what studies I need to follow? and also how can I keep myself from getting burnt out? Thank you, I hope yall are having a great time!

2022-05-14 04:54:01 +0000 UTCThis has probably been asked already, but what are some of your must have art books? Whether it’s art for a game or movie, or just an artists collected pieces, what are your favorite? Also, a long time ago you posted a link to Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust on YouTube and I finally got around to watching it recently. It’s gotta be pretty much the tightest shiz I’ve ever seen. Based off of that and the art that you post, I have a somewhat similar taste to the things that you like (Evangelion, Chrono Trigger, FromSoftware, etc.). What are some other things that are awesome that I should be looking into - books, movies, games, etc? Thanks man, you’re the best

2022-05-14 00:18:53 +0000 UTCHey Dave and Kim! My brain is a naughty boy who doesn't want to do what's good for him. When I hear Dave talk about how important it is to have a goal and a study schedule, I get paralyzed by indecision. I'm interested in comics, game and movie illustration, fanart for my favorite media, and so much more. But it feels impossible to narrow down my goal from "I wanna paint whatever I want as well as Craig Mullins!" to something specific and achievable, like, "I'm going to build a portfolio for tabletop game illustration that will get me hired in under two years. Then, within five years, I want to work on Magic: The Gathering." Deciding on something solid to aim for is like trying to teach dog tricks to a cat. I've worked all sorts of random jobs, and I'm truly sick of pouring all of my time and energy into pointless labor. It's so depressing and draining, I can't even focus on art practice in my free time. I just want to draw and paint things for a living, and build my creative skills along the way. Any advice on how to break through this mental block? P.S. To Dave and Dan: Thank you for the awesome portfolio review stream. I learned so much. And thanks to Kim for moderating! I want you all to know that I love and appreciate how much value you're putting into this Patreon. This really is one of the best resources for art education and professional development that I've found in all my years as a part time art hobbyist and full time internet gremlin. Massive thanks!

2022-05-13 23:41:40 +0000 UTCHi Dave, Typically, when you post a piece of "concept art," it resembles the sort of artwork you'd see in an "Art Of" book or an old Nintendo Power magazine. I'm thinking of the pieces you've done recently, such as the Bloody Roar shark character or the Pilot guy. When you are working on concepts, how much of your work is this type of art? In concept art portfolios online, you see things like thumbnails, palette re-colors, orthographics, callouts with photo textures attached, etc. I find it hard to understand exactly what companies are looking for when they want a "concept artist." I guess at the end of the day my question is, if I want to put together a portfolio to get jobs as a video game and movie concept artist, exactly what type of work should go in it? If my stuff looks like the sort of thing you'd see in an art book for a FromSoftware game or a Marvel movie, is that good enough? Am I missing something? Thanks, much love to your whole family!

2022-05-13 23:22:53 +0000 UTCHello Dave and Kim. What would be the best advice to build a strong portfolio to present to Wizards of the Coast. That's my dream since I was a child 😀😀😀😀

2022-05-13 23:01:49 +0000 UTCHow do you even find the time to paint for yourself? What's a good time to shoot for a personal work if, say, you don't have much?

2022-05-13 22:53:26 +0000 UTCThanks Dave (and Kim if you're reading this) sorry if this has been asked before I haven't watched all your stuff yet! I wanted to know, If you were just starting to post stuff online in order to gain an audience or just to get your work in front of the right eyes, given the disparity between what social media was like when you first started and what its like now, what would you do differently? In this case the "right eyes" would be whoever is in charge of acquiring new comic cover artists. Thanks for your time and also the affordable but priceless resources, as someone who doesn't have a pot to piss it means a lot!

2022-05-13 22:50:51 +0000 UTCHi Dave and Kim I have 2 questions Question 1: Do you have any advice for trying to make webcomics for someone who started their art journey about a year ago? I have some plot ideas and characters thought out just need to improve on my artistic skills. Question 2: How did you guys meet?

2022-05-13 22:42:18 +0000 UTCOkay, David "Champ" Rapoza is given the reigns of the Guyver IP. What does he do with it? Adapt it as a TV show, animated thing, movie or as a dramatic stageplay? Or a circus act with costumed rats? No seriously, if you were given 100% creative liberty with the Guyver IP, what would you do with it and how would some of the designs or redesigns maybe look like?
