Grayscale to Color - Digital Pencil Approach

Watch the video here!

Hey!

Hope you're well! Today's video tutorial covers my digital pencil approach to rendering value and quickly applying color in order to take a black and white "pencil" drawing and turn them into a color pencil style render that can then go in a variety of directions depending on your approach. The beginning of the video is a very rough breakdown of the initial steps followed by the full approach.

This style is applicable for something along the lines of a Drew Struzan style illustration, Brian Froud style, or really any of the more traditional pencil base approaches that you're familiar with.

There is another video upcoming that will show a similar approach but with an oil feel - rendering values using more textured brushes initially rather than pencil and quickly jumping into applying colors to those rendered values for an easy finish look. Here's the render for that style -

I hope this was helpful for you! Please let me know if you have any further questions, happy to clarify!

Thanks as always for your support!

Dave

Just watched this one fully and man I learned so much, thanks Dave. It really hit me when you talked about it's not about finding just THE WAY to do everything, it changes always for different projects. I have been so focused on updating my ONE way of doing things and always kinda ditching how I used to do certain things as I "upgrade" This really changes my whole viewpoint on style, appreciate it.

Thanks Dave for you answer. Muchas gracias.

Thank you, I meant for it to release the following week but I was unable to finish editing before leaving on my trip - that video will be up on the 29th, that's the first date I'll be able to meet when I return, but it'll at least be before the end of the month!

I still waiting for the second control video about how to paint the skull olí paint texture please upload. I sorry for being impatient but I love your style work

Antonio Marinelli

The texture is better bro! I feel like this kinda thing is merging the Nintendo power sorta thing with more tight drawings, super cool shapes

Thanks for giving us your time and making another great video. This pencil brush is awesome

Hey Dave, thx for the video ! Quick note, if you tap on the little thing under the two colors when you use a brush, it will let you paint with no color. So basically it is the same as you do but you can only use this process with b&w right whereas if you use the little square just under the colors then you could use it when coloring too because it will juste pain with no colors Hope it makes sense, if it doesn’t you can just try and you’ll understand in like 2secs

<3 Thank You
