“You won’t get away with this!” You bark back, your words hot with anger at what she had done to your friend, “I’ll go to the media. To security. To anyone who will listen!”

“How droll,” Alice says, sighing in exaggerated disbelief, “Daddy owns security. Owns more media outlets than you’ve had hot meals. Besides, who is going to miss a grade D citizen? I bet his job in whichever shithole he worked in is filled already. You breed like rats down in the ‘sumps, always crawling over each other for any scraps that fall down from the high spires”

“His family...” You begin.

“Have been compensated handsomely,” Alice interrupts, without giving you a chance to finish, “By the Delv Corp, on behalf of a CEO who is sorry about the workplace accident that claimed Joe’s life.”

She stands there, admiring the beauty that could be afforded by unlimited funds, “Raven will have a far better life besides me than she every would have down-tower. She’ll get to eat real meat, sip the finest wines, and attend the finest parties that Stacks have to offer. Whilst here...” She beckons around to the disrepair of the sump: Oily water dribbling down from broken pipes as dirty street lumens barely project down enough light to bring the garbage-strewn alleyway to dusky twilight.

“... is nothing of any importance.” Alice concludes.

“Just. Like. You...” She adds, smirking, each word punctuated by knowing arrogance, “And that is why no one is going to miss you, either.”
