Berrys body was attracted to its soul. As he says, they are not supposed to be separate, it is not equal to split the soul and body. Also Mustang is not just badass, he is outright terrifying. His alchemy is exceptionally dangerous and powerful. While someone like Ed or Al could do the chemical decomposition that Mustang does, his training and skill allows him to do it with pinpoint precision, meaning that even if you know the alchemy reaction he does, you cannot replicate it without an immense amount of training and experience. In a very short amount of time he kills lust again and again to deplete her entirely. Compare that to the amount of work someone talented like Ed had to do to even hurt Greed a little. I love the dynamic between Mustang and Hawkeye, they have such an interesting and deep dynamic with many layers in their relationship.

This is a pretty common format in manga/anime where the main villain has a "council" of themed underlings (think Elite Four in Pokemon) that the good guys gang must learn unveil the identity of and defeat one by one. A lot of the worldbuilding is done by this point and the story will really kick into high gear from now on!
