Sweet Home (NES)

Sweet Home was supposed to be my Halloween video for this year, but something came up, I moved stuff around, and now you have it like a month early.

Before I get to that something that came up, I'll just say working on this video introduced me to the world of Japanese film director Kiyoshi Kurosawa. I watched a bunch of his movies and bought the Criterion Collection version of his 1997 film Cure, because I loved it so much. I also had fun playing Sweet Home. I've played it a few times over the years, so it was cool to jump back in with a more analytical mindset. Great game.

So yeah, about the thing that came up for October. It's another game, so breathe a sigh of relief. I'm not checking out or taking a break or anything. The game is Yuuyami Doori Tankentai for PS1. I read about it while making the Twilight/Moonlight Syndrome video last year. It's from the same team that did Twilight, so no Suda meddling. But then I kind of forgot about it until I saw someone post a screenshot on Bluesky which reignited my curiosity. I've been playing it, and, well, HOO BOY. This is the next video.

There's no fan translation, so it's another Japanese-only game. The video is going to take a while, because it's kind of a long game and the dialogue text auto scrolls. My Japanese is good, but I still have to go back and check the footage after a recording session to catch stuff that I couldn't read fast enough, so that's adding an extra step. It's worth it though. Seriously, there are parts of the story and presentation in this game that make me want to cry, they're so good.

Anyway, it will be done before Halloween. You can count on it.

Until then, enjoy Sweet Home.

Dungeon Chill. Out.

Rewatched the movie this year and it's still, for me anyway, an absolute blast.
