Crikey, this one was a LONG time coming!
We filmed this video back in September but the origins of this song go back much, much further.
I was writing nerdy songs for fun for years before I was ever recording them. I've a backlog of (admittedly mostly terrible) old songs I wrote before Find the Keys that were just for fun, I never expected to do much with them. This song was among the first I ever wrote, some time around 6 or 7 years ago.
When I would write these songs I would often use the instrumentals from other artists I liked... This one was written to a Dan Bull instrumental. That same year I met Dan at London Comicon. He was there in 2014 selling his CDs and merch.

(This is the CD I bought the day I first met Dan. Incidentally, the only other signed CD I have is from ERB, both are kept on display right beside my desk.)
I was almost to shy to speak to him, it took a lot of convincing from my girlfriend for me to approach the table. At which point I awkwardly gushed fanboy-ness at him for a minute or so before telling him about this rap battle I'd been writing over one of his beats.
...Except I got nervous and choked. What I wanted to say was: 'Thanks to you, you've inspired me to try writing my own rap!'
What I actually, awkwardly said was: '...Thanks for inspiring me...' with no real context or explanation. At which I point I felt incredibly embarrassed and quickly left feeling like I'd made an idiot of myself in front of my favourite YouTuber.
Fast forward six years and I'm working with Dan on a semi-regular basis, sitting in his office brainstorming collaboration ideas when I remember the 'Minecraft Vs Lego' battle I'd embarrassed myself over years before.
Turns out Dan didn't remember anything I'd said. But he DID remember the neon pink suit I was wearing to Comicon.
He liked the idea! So we set about polishing up the lyrics, bringing them up to date.
But there was one problem...
In the years since I had written the original version Lego had struck a deal with Minecraft and now 'Lego Minecraft' was a thing. This couldn't go unaddressed. Here we had 2 sides fighting when there was clear evidence that they actually got along out in the real world.
The path was clear. Lego Minecraft had to enter the ring to tackle the issue head on. We decided to use the two endings idea from our Frostpunk battle. In one, Lego Minecraft would arrive to reconcile the differences and end the battle with harmony. In the other, Lego Minecraft would descend as the superior builder-being to put both battlers in their places.
But who could play the character...?
Luckily Dan said he knew a couple of guys with some rap battle experience he could probably get to help out...
If you'd have told lil' baby Stupes back in 2014 that one day his dumb Minecraft Vs Lego rap would be made alongside some of his favourite creators, you'd have melted his tiny little pre-moustached head.
I want to thank each and every one of you for your support in helping me get to this point. It truly was an honour to get to work with Dan, Pete & Lloyd on this track and I'm so stoked to finally be able to share it with everyone.
~Stupes out!
