2024-07-30 23:04:12 +0000 UTCI'm a musician who composes metal and synthwave music both traditionally and with AI and both Will and Chad both make great arguments in their stance on AI art and music. A lot of people feel that a musician should be "playing from the heart" and should consciously choose each note, chord, melody, beat, etc. when composing, and feel that AI is like a cheat code for songwriting. While I don't disagree with the sentiment, 99.9% of musicians are not reinventing the wheel when they write a song regardless of whether they use AI or not. A lot of music composition consists of combining well-established musical phrases, chord progressions, and rhythms to get your desired sound and is not as spontaneous as listeners often believe. It is performed to look emotional, heartfelt or to illicit emotion in the audience, but oftentimes the songwriting process isn't as glamourous as the performance implies. There are a lot of tedious, repetitive, and frankly, boring parts of songwriting whether you use AI or record everything from scratch. I think somewhere in there is where the "cheat code" mentality comes from. AI cuts out most of the hard work and dedication, while giving you "pretty good" results. Its easy to see why it seems like the better option when compared to dedicating years or decades to learning the ins-and-outs of songwriting and musicianship. However, it is important to note that if you only compose using AI, you will never have your own "sound". Every song will sound like a demo that was recorded by different musicians, in a different studio, by a different engineer. I have been experimenting with re-recording AI songs I've composed with real instruments and I have to say, it helps TREMENDOUSLY. My advice is to use AI AS A TOOL. Use it to help you, not to do a majority of the job for you. Just as calculators caused most Americans to forget math, AI will cause musicians to forget music theory and composition. That said, at the end of the day, the audience decides.

The tools involved don’t make said art less valuable. Chad is not claiming to be a musician. He is simply creating art, and all will seems to want to do is knock it down and invalidate it. 2024-07-30 17:17:51 +0000 UTCAs a musician, I can totally understand Will’s hesitation in his appreciation for Chad’s album. He’s only defending musicians and it’s an important distinction. Chad put in a lot of creative and unique work ARRANGING the music. He wrote the lyrics, but then arranged the melodies, choruses, etc. It doesn’t diminish it’s credibility as music, but it’s certainly its own flavor. It’s on Genre within a genre. I think Chad should be happy with Will’s criticism and understand it’s coming from a place of love and encouragement. He just doesn’t want his friend to get burned because more naturally talented musicians may not accept purely arranged music!
