That's what combat was back then let alone torture lol... Later on in our history, we developed even worse forms of torture on a real level. Check out the medieval ages lol. This movie got a lot of flak, and Judas also helped carry the cross. Forgiveness is easy enough to talk about, when you lose a dad and brothers in a foreign war talk to me.

Also The Chosen is a great show, it’s about the disciples and shows you the life of Jesus. Not all of it is Biblically accurate, but it’s also tv entertainment so they added a bunch of scenarios to make viewers relate more to the disciples. Ngl not everyone loves it because it’s not entirely biblically accurate, but it’s not a bad show.

It was much worse in reality, Jesus was torn up and disfigured and naked on the cross… couldn’t tell if He was a man or woman.

Jim Caviezel is a good actor, you should see him in 2001 The Count of Monte Cristo, Which I believe got him the role of Passion Of the Christ. In an interview, Jim Capezol mentions that Hollywood blacklisted him due to him accepting the role to play Jesus

I would highly recommend watching the film called RISEN after this. It was released in 2016. The films message of the Resurrection is told through the eyes of a non believer. It will blow you away.

You two just earned a new patreon membership from me just for reacting to this. In case you're wondering, the woman that was with Mary was the woman who was caught red handed committing adultery. The Pharisees asked Jesus "Teacher, this woman was caught in adultery. The Law of Moses says she's to be stoned. But what do you say?" Jesus ignored them, so they asked again. Then Jesus stood up and said "Let the man with no sin cast the first stone." Since they were all guilty of sin, they threw their stones down at Jesus' feet.

This is a Love story. He endured worst than they showed. It’s just a fun story to some and they are just use to PG stuff. We must try to grasp as much as we can. Especially the tough to watch stuff. If not, what was the point.
Even the devil believes in Him. What seperates us is action to Follow and thank Him everyday. If we just know of the dude and just be blazzay blah then we no different.
Thank you Jesus for this beautiful sacrifice. I’m sorry for not following you. I’m going to try and start.
Thanks Ash and Hannah

I'm not religious, like at all, but this is a really good film. So well done. I don't know the specifics of this, only the basics, so I never did compare it to accuracy of the Bible. That being said I obviously recognize the main aspects/storyline and I'm not completely out of the loop of the story. So from this perspective, I think it's amazing and very well done. Definitely a must-watch. But I'm similar to Hannah. I've only ever watched this film one time before and couldn't watch it again. Too gruesome for me, very hard to watch. But I feel like it's very important to watch films like these so I'm super glad you guys watched it. This is only my second ever rewatch and it reminded me of how hard it was to watch it the first time. 😆

Jesus revealed himself to his disciples and many others after his death. The only other explanation I’ve heard is they hallucinated. But group hallucinations are not a thing.
Either way I can’t 100% prove this to be true and neither can people 100% prove it to be untrue. Everyone has to do their research and way up the evidence. There’s a good podcast which dives into this called “questioning Christianity” by Tim Keller. As unbiased as one can get.

Thank you for reacting to this. It's a real tough watch, but it's meant to be. I know for many Christians it's easy to say you believe and that Jesus died for your sins. But to see what that actually means and what Jesus went through, it puts true faith and sacrifice in perspective. Appreciate you both for the reaction.

I might be alone in thinking that the violence in this movie isn't much worse than in other films. Crucifixion is awful, Christians seem to think it was a unique punishment for Jesus, with only two really terrible criminals joining him. Truthfully he would have been hanging there with many other prisoners. Crucifixion was the standard punishment for the Romans.

the problem with your statement "NO ONE dies for something they know to be untrue." is that you're forgetting that they could THINK its true but be wrong.

Bold decision to do this Ash. Probably the first big time reactors to do it.
Crazy to think humanity's timeline is centred on this. 2025 years...from what? Makes you think, and the fact his followers became willing to die for their belief. I know some people believe that the disciples lied about his resurrection. But the fact is, NO ONE dies for something they know to be untrue.
And if all this is true. It's eternally important. My encouragement to all is to read the Gospels with an open mind (not based on your potentially negative experience with Christians). The best way to learn about the story of Christianity is through Christ.

I watched this when it first came out, and was shaking and exhausted while I watched it…tonight I watched it for the 2nd time with the same reaction.
The reason this movie focused so much on the crucifixion is because we really do not comprehend what Jesus did for us . Scholars at the time said this was the most accurate depiction of Jesus‘s crucifixion. He went through so much, He took all our sins upon Himself. In the beginning of the movie, Jesus is praying and even sweating blood which happens under intense stress( you can read about this in medical articles)… He knew how horrible it was going to be and yet He still took our punishment. Yes, God will judge us when we stand before Him, and if we have rejected His son it will not be good. Jesus died the most horrible death to restore us to God, as we are separated by our sin… but He loves us SO MUCH, that He sent His one and only son, Jesus Christ, that whoever believes in him, will not perish but have everlasting life.” John 3:16.
I completely felt the exhaustion but also kept thinking about the victory in the end. The devil thought he had defeated Jesus because He died on the cross, but Jesus ( before He rose from the dead) went to hell and released the prisoners, the Bible says Jesus witnessed to them and took the keys to Life and death, and then rose from the dead. You should watch The Chosen! It tells everything and is not as heavy. Thank you both for watching and being real. God bless. ❤️❤️

Love yalls content, but for this one I wanted you both to know that the reason all those people who were able to look into Jesus eyes as they encountered him upclose reacted the way they did was because in their inner being as a human creation by God they became self aware deep within of their sin and that something was being done on behalf of them, a righteous sacrifice because God loves us humans. They were able to see their own sinful nature in a way and felt the love that was breaking forth for them.

We aren't meant to enjoy this film. We're meant to see what Christ suffered for us out of love to save us from slavery to sin and death. Reading the story of Christ's whipping and crucifixion in the Bible is one thing - seeing it played out in all it's gory realness is completely different. I'm Catholic, I think it's a necessary film to witness for believers. To see what our sins caused, to remember that & help us endure temptation and not give in easily and flippantly.... It's quite easy for us to say today that if we lived back then and witnessed Jesus' healings, & His Resurrection after death - that we would definitely believe. But that's simply not true really. Plenty of people DON'T WANT to believe, because we love our sins; we don't want to give them up and have to change the way we live our lives.

Before we can see the Cross as something done FOR us, leading to faith and worship….
We have to see it as something done BY us, leading us to repentance.

The temple was Jesus himself. He chose to die and then rose in 3 days. The Pharasees' temple that was destroyed in the earthquake at the time Jesus died was a representation of Earthly desire for power. Mel Gibson did take some artistic liberties with parts of this movie, but if you read the Gospels in the Bible the main events and dialogue are spot on. The brutality of the scourge and crucifixion was toned down but essentially accurate based on records of Roman punishment in this era. The reason they broke the legs of the men being crucified was because in this form of punishment they had to push up with their feet to breathe. The nail in the feet was placed between the bones so they could bear weight and as the men sunk dow with their arms raised their airways would be blocked. The only way to breathe would be to push themselves back up with their feet against the nail (I learned this during an Easter sermon at church). From an agnostic who was raised in a Christian Southern Baptist household, this movie was the visual representation of what I was taught in church at from a young age. I still appreciate the beauty enwrapped in the brutality to this day. I appreciated your reaction!

The beating he took before the cross was a Roman confession stand… the pain would increase after every hit to get the “criminal” to confess but he never committed any crimes or sins… there’s a lot that Jesus went through that wasn’t shown cause it’s too much. For example they ripped his beard off by hand.

Great movie choice and great reaction! I grew up going to Catholic school and this movie came out when I was in 2nd grade. I didn't see it back then because I was too young, but it really shocked me when I saw it in high school. Another great Catholic movie I saw in high school I'd love to see you react to is The Song of Bernadette (1943). It tells the story of a French girl, Saint Bernadette, in the 1850s who was visited by Our Lady of Lourdes. Thank you guys again and God bless!

Well, guys, there you go. And the brutality of it all is that this movie doesn't even touch what Jesus actually suffered. It's the closest thing in media we have, but it still doesn't come close. I only watched it because Gibson is a great director. And I'm glad I did because it is EXCELLENT filmmaking. Ash, I get why the minister told you not to watch it. Reading the Biblical account is the only way to go. Because otherwise you're watching all the violence without the spiritual context. And then it just seems sadistic to a non-believer. And an Author once went on a journey to disprove Christ's existence. What he found instead turned him into a Christian. One really important point that got him was how scared the disciples initially were. So much that Peter denied someone he loved. But after the Resurrection and the Holy Spirit empowering them, they all willingly died for their faith. We know all but John died as martyrs. Something changed those men, something powerful. Oh yeah, Jim got zapped by lighting during filming while he was up on the cross. God wasn't really into it, I guess.

Interestingly. The Roman that pierced his stomach at the end with that spear to make sure He was dead was mostly blind. When the water from Christ’s body sprayed onto him touched his face it healed his affliction and he could fully see. He went on to become a saint and a warrior. The Romans cut out his tongue for praising his name but he died a Christian. I recommend reading into it all, Christian’s get a bad wrap bc of the money hungry “preachers” and whatnot, but it’s full of awesome stories like that. Love from Texas you guys.
