That was Toothless! it's the same thing Hiccup saw in the beginning when he had his little wooden catapult aiming up into the night sky and you see a dark silhouette of the Night Fury.

He apologizes and says he's proud BEFORE Hiccup takes on the dragon and does anything heroic. It shows how he's changed and how much he loves his son just as he is ❤
