Oni sketches

Hey when’s the last time I posted some design sketches? I’m thinking of doing a finished drawing of the height chart here and using it in issue three. This particular sketch I had to do for my own use… keeping size in mind when drawing a group where your usually hefty character is the literal smallest in the group can be challenging.

As for all of the regular Oni, I started with a drawing I did in 2011 and pretty much distilled its characteristics into the three distinct demons. The large profile of green Oni is working out a whole face for a panel where part is cropped off by the edge of the page. I sometimes need to draw something in its entirety to feel like I got the proportions right. The club (kanabo) is a template I made for myself. It’s actually a decent club, the big Onis were gaslighting littlest Oni.

The Sazae Oni are aquatic and are sometimes depicted in turban shells like a hermit crab. I decided to make him a bit slug-like for added ick.

I will probably make a few more posts like this with sketches from Skull Island, Mitch’s Symposium, and Tanelorn (Eternal Champions).
