Hey it’s page one of a new story for our upcoming Star Trek zine. This one though chronicling the films as they came out are not about the films per se, but related anecdotes to the experience of the films, if that makes sense.
Like in the Sadako zine, there will be a glossary of terms, and acronyms used to refer to films and series… Trekkies are familiar with but casual fans may or may not be. This page uses the following:
TOS- the original series. This gets used for a lot of series that have had reboots or revivals, but it originated with Star Trek once The Next Generation had been around for a while and started to be known as TNG, the original got its own acronym (TOS).
TMP- the Motion Picture. Most film and series acronyms drop the “Star Trek” and just make use of the post-colon title.
TWOK- the Wrath of Kahn. See? You’re getting the hang of it.
Fan Fiction- fans writing stories about characters in existing media, originating with Star Trek… and this also originated the concept of “shipping”— creating a romantic relationship between two characters within a fan fiction, with Kirk and Spock to be specific. This was sometimes set to music and called “filking”. I don’t know why.
Drawing this page out made me question why I never got much into writing Fan Fiction. I was doing plenty of world building on my own worlds, being an obsessive Dungeon Master at the time, and later would write my own stories for comics… I think it probably just had a lot to do with it ultimately not being my own, and canon could come along at any time and make anything I came up with obsolete.
