Naruto: The Outsider's Resolve: [SEE TITLE BELOW]

TITLE: ANBU TEST IDEAS

(Couldn't put it in the post title because the genin and chunin tier would've been spoiled)

———

Greetings, my dear people!

There's an in-story week until Takuma will face the ANBU tests. There's at least  5-7 chapters worth of story that will happen before we reach that point. Which is good for me as it gives me time to think about the ANBU tests.

I'll be honest, I have some ideas, but I don't have a general feel for it. I know there's going to be some aspects of survival, combat, stealth, espionage—among other things. But I haven't decided how to present them.

Here, I need your help. If you guys have any suggestions regarding the tasks included in the test week(s)—anything that you think will fit into what ANBU would like to see in a recruit—put them below into the comments.

Because they're asking Takuma to put aside 2 weeks, the tasks can be flexible when it come to time, 2-3 days for a task is A-okay 👍 (wow, emoji!). Your original ideas, things that you have read in other stories (doesn't have to be Naruto fics)—I will take anything at all, no matter how out there it is.

You can plan a premise for the mission and add restrictions to it. For example, if you remember quite early in the story, Takuma snuck into a publishing house under the disguise of a repairman and had imposed a self-restriction that he won't use the Transformation Jutsu.

Of course, the Discord is open to anyone who wishes to join and chat with me in the patron-exclusive channels. I'll be posing this post there as well and workshop any promising ideas. You'll have to connect your Patreon account to your Discord handle for that.

I will be awaiting your responses,

Spend 3 days shadowing real ANBU operatives to see how they work and try to integrate with them. After 3 days he is sent on a real ANBU mission for a high profile assassination and told he has to pose as a real ANBU agent. Takuma is told there is 1 or 2 other prospective ANBU being evaluated doing the same. He has to figure out who is real and who isn't while completing the mission. While they are are undercover and observing the target Takuma and the group are forced to escape after the mission is compromised. Takuma and another are captured and interrogated. The other detainee breaks and spills everything, revealing they are another genin being evaluated during an ANBU test. This will test Takuma's -Ability to adapt and blend in -Skills in observation and information gathering -Strength in combat and ability to evade capture -Mental fortitude during interrogation and torture -Focus on completing the mission -Loyalty to the village The test in reality won't have any others being evaluated as it'll just be a group testing him. His team, the target and the interrogators are all ANBU(or affiliated) who are

This was EXTREMELY helpful. I just got a whole lot of clarity on what to do in the tests. I will probably do the lie detector test at the end because it would be more impactful from a story standpoint as you put it. I have some ideas cooking in my mind.

Okay from here on out, it's gonna be a tapeworm since dumping this here lets me get some things in order in my head. So, fucking brace yourself; this is gonna be a looooooong boi. I want to make some things clear. The way I imagined the interview the Anbu would have with Takuma in my head was a mix of a series of interviews you have to go through in real life if you want to get accepted in my neck of the woods. Oh, and before I start with the interviews, I want you to understand that people who do national security can really make you feel the reality of having a record from birth to the present day. There is no human who doesn't have records on them, and the government has full capacity to access them in certain cases, especially when matters like national security are involved. That and a thorough background check work like a charm. If they knock on your door to recruit you, then they are confident in their already existing file on you and have knocked on ten other doors next to yours to scout how you "carry yourself" too. So, anyway, what I'm trying to say is that they will know everything there is to know about you record-wise. But that doesn't sound like anything, does it? What the fuck do you mean, you ask? Well, I dunno... I can give you examples though! I know some stories like this one: a guy had his teen criminal record brought up. Oh, what did he do? Nothing, the guy was straight as an arrow, but when he was 13-15 years old at summer camp, they were living inside a 12-person arrangement, and some girls decided to hide their cigs inside a hole in a mattress on one of the bunk beds. Ofc they picked his bed. Long story short, camp coordinator found them, and a whole shit show ensued, and the bitch of camp watcher called the cops. No one got locked up/asked to go to the station or appear in court, but the law somehow took notice, and he got an infraction or something? The lesson here is that even if it is something stupid. On paper, it was you having a cig cache at fifteen at best. This means stupid shit that happened to you that wasn't even your fault can negatively affect your future if it's written down somewhere. Another one is a person having to admit someone else did their academy work for them. They just fucking got into his emails and his correspondence. I hope this clears up some things. Now, back to the interviews. In order: **Psychological interview** - This is where they ask you the heavy shit, and you have to do some tests. Written tests. God bless streamlined processes for things like the human psyche. Every place that has them will have applicanta who learn how they want them to fill them out. Takuma would probably have it like this: How did you deal with the death of your parents? He would be asked about his time in the war, if he has any connections (friendships) in the village. He would be gently probed for signs of PTSD and psychotic tendencies, etc. Since being maimed counts as a mental issue, he would be asked about his scars. There are reports on them, and he had them for a very long time and shows tendencies to hide them. They are all over his body, and seasoned veterans would be stunned into silence upon seeing them. Depending on how he responds to any question, they might probe a bit or change lanes and ask something else. The written part is there to make sure there is nothing wrong upstairs with you (real heavy shit they ask you to your face). For example, if for the question: "Do you like being by yourself or spending time with friends?" you pick friends, and a couple of questions down the line for the question "Do you stay at home to read your favorite book or go to a football game you were invited to?" If you pick the book? then bam, that is a clear indicator that something is wrong under your dome. If you want a reference, maybe look up gun owner/cop psych tests in your country. **Medical check-up** - They have your entire medical history, and they also do a thorough check-up like weight, height, hearing, sight, etc. And then they chuck you into pre-selection to basically find out if you're physically able to perform your duties. They even check your teeth! No agency wants to cover dental expenses. I heard stories of people literally being turned down and told to come back with their teeth fixed. **Lie detector interview** - Okay, here is where the really scary shit happens. They know everything about you down to the details. Everything both good and bad that was written down about you and preserved. Most child records don't carry into the future (mostly, because after 10 years they get shredded) unless you killed a dog in your spare time or had some problems with the law. But Takuma is a complete case. He's barely fifteen. He was on their radar since before he left the police force. The already existing file they began on him in his police force days should now be significantly more expanded since they were scouting him out ever since he came back up on their radar during the war. They would know everything about him. The purpose of the lie detector interview is to get confirmation from your mouth and to check what you are willing to lie about. Also, to weed out the undesirables (those who break the law/have broken the law in a serious manner in the past even if they weren't caught), and disloyal/traitor material. It would be pretty fucking stupid to allow someone like that into, idk, a national security agency, maybe? They would also ask about anything they find suspicious. Pfew okay. Im fkn done. Hope my rambling will be the least bit helpful.

Sandromanta

Since being part of the ANBU would involve Takuma being privy to classified information, I recommend having tests to challenge Takuma's trustworthiness and ability to keep secrets. In the case that Takuma is captured by enemy shinobi, the ANBU would want to see how he stands up to interrogation and make sure he does not break. I don't know if Takuma has had much experience on the other side of the interrogation table, so it might be interesting to see how he handles it. To get a security clearance in the United States, the government does an in-depth background check on the individual being applied for. The check involves providing information about foreign trips and contacts, where you have lived, and providing references to vouch for you. Takuma is an orphan and has plenty of friends in the Hidden Leaf that would vouch for him, so that's all good; the only snag he could have is his past from before he came to the Ninja world. How would he answer detailed questions about anything before his final year in the ninja academy when he can't remember?

OldJadeOwl

As for testing, I imagine the initial battery of tests would be intense physical evaluations, various sparring exercises, both limited to certain disciplines and no-holds barred. After all, if an operative cannot meet the elite standards of ANBU or show the potential for that development, then putting them through further training would be a waste. Once through that, I could see an intense personality battery being conducted, possibly in tandem with the SERE training. After that, you would be able to assign an operative, and have them either begin to work in teams for tactical/secret police work, or train them for complete self-sufficiency to conduct foreign operations. Really interested to see how Maruboshi will help refine Takuma’s new skills. Keep up the great work!

HYP3R

I have seen a lot of great suggestions on here, but have not read them all, so I’ll just throw in my thoughts for what they are worth. I think you would do well to draw from what we know of special forces and intelligence operations training in the real world, while also keeping setting in mind. Some kind of jacked up capture/interrogation sequence on chakra steroids has tons of potential. I also think the idea of ANBU departments being a good idea in a similar way to segmenting our intelligence forces. I would imagine that they have domestic secret police, tactical teams, and foreign affairs operatives. I’d be interested to see how exactly shinobi organize their foreign surveillance. Maybe they have operatives “defect” and operate as missing nin within enemy territory. I personally think it would make sense to combine espionage and assassination. Takuma has already shown the power that a single, intelligent shinobi can have behind enemy lines. With sufficient training, it seems as if ANBU spies would be able to conduct covert assassinations throughout the course of their intelligence gathering duties with ease.

HYP3R

I like the ideas other people have, but I'll just add that I imagined it to be like the batman begins movie where he's being Tested for the league of shadows. There's this bit where he takes a drug that makes his perception wonky and he has to face his fear (of bats etc). Introspective stuff, confront his fear of isolation (kon? His unexplained past?). More mind than body stuff. Hmm, maybe having to fight an anbu Captain- imagine having to fight kakashi or itachi in a dark cave or something. Scary af. Anyway, good so far! Hope to see more nenro and masaaki!

Matty

Okay so in order: Story wise the most impact would be if that stuff came up at the end since there would be a lot more investment/at stake by this point of the recrutiment process. But if it were more like irl? The interview would be the first thing on the menu. There's no fucking waaaay they'd let you get through all that recruitment process WITH OTHER RECRUITS mind you before making sure you're not an undesirable element. Especially if it involves international affairs at that level. How Takuma should respond depends on how much you want to push some story point forwards. Because it really depends on how much of a mind fuck you're planning on making this interview for him. Anyway I agree with Vyle that he should come clean about it but defend his actions in places he feels he was somewhat justified. These kinda people don't come at you with shit like that unless they have it docummented on paper somwhere. If you want I can give you a tapeworm of text on how the interview would go (what they would know about him mostly) if Takuma were to try out irl say in my country 🤷

Sandromanta

The tests should be designed in a way that have nothing to do with assassination and Intel collecting. A true Shinobi and ANBU can find, use, and control informational and targets with no clue as to what is going on. They are the elite of the elite, most ANBU tend to be people who are big names in the shinobi world.

M.S. A.

I really think denying it would be dumb. ANBU obviously knows about his criminal past. Even the police force knew about the Ring fighting. If Takuma starts denying everything even tho everyone knows the accusations are true and the ANBU-nins would probably know that Takuma knows that they know everything because he's not dumb. It would just be silly. The only reason to deny everything would be to prove that he won't break and spill his secrets but in a situation where it's clear that all his secrets are out it would be dumb. In that situation he should quickly move on from denying everything and try to find out what the ANBU thinks about his past and try to soften any negative impact it would have.

Vyle

A false target. That's great. I think I'll try to incorporate something like that into the tests. Because, after all— "A shinobi should look underneath the underneath"

FictionOnlyReader

I think creating a hostile environment is a good suggestion. I won't have them operate in foreign lands because ANBU won't have mere prospects operating outside the Land of Fire as a test. But I think I have an idea of creating a hostile environment inside the nation.

FictionOnlyReader

I like your suggestions a lot. Especially the part about not going the "silent badasses". I'm going to try doing something different with ANBU. Now, about the interrogation about Takuma's 'dark history'. Drug dealing, Ring prizefighting, Enomoto as his source in Police Force. Where do you think that should come in? During the start, mid, or late. Secondly, how do you think Takuma should respond to it. In my mind, he should deny everything to the end regardless of what they throw at him. But, am I missing something? Would another response be better in this case?

FictionOnlyReader

Can you explain what do you mean by "Internal Audits" ? I don't know what that means.

FictionOnlyReader

I think we need to really consider the naming of the organization here: Special Assassination and Tactical Squad. They are, at least 50%, oriented around assassination. That means Stealth Skills and Killing Skills. A major portion of the tests should be oriented around being completey invisible and killing people. Examinations on the vital points of the human body, mock spars with painted Kunai where the ONLY victory are blows deemed as lethal (So direct hits to important arteries or heart or vital organs), stealth tests vs both high level and sensory Nin wherein bells are tied to them or they have to take drugs that make chakra control harder. One big thing would for sure be prisoner executions-most people don't get the death penalty, but some do, and there's a zero % chance the ANBU will hire on someone who reacts badly to killing-they need to test that immediately on an acceptable target. Other than assassination, a massive and important thing to invoke is self-control-this is where I think Takuma is likely to have the worst results. He notably has made several emotional decisions in the past, most recently during Rikka's funeral, and they should do their best to see how he maintains order when emotionally stressed to his breaking point with high pressure insults-such as someone using Rikka's image in transformation jutsu to fuck with him, or showing his mentor dead, or things like that.

Jon Davis

Real life special forces have something like this. No sleep, intense physical workout. Resisting simulated torture. Check out something like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Survival%2C_Evasion%2C_Resistance_and_Escape?wprov=sfla1

focus2x

Honestly I think something that should be represented in the anbu trials is teamwork, in a lot of real life SF selections teamwork is the most important part you can get through the entire selection process but get voted out by your Peers for being a asshole and not contributing

John Dope

Interesting. A week-long treck for shinobi is a long distance, though. Country spanning maybe. And I believe the difficulty would be lower, so maybe adding some kind of obstacle would be good. Also, killing children is a must. I mean, they get out of the academy at 12. In rare cases, like Kakashi or Itachi, you may find a 7 y/o kid out to kill you. And considering geniuses, you won't have the leisure to go easy on them. You made good points though.

Fastus

Hell, I even found the official statement: "Candidates during Selection must successfully pass psychological evaluations, a physical test, an English or other foreign language test (as declared by the candidate), and a multi-day, physically and mentally exhausting field test in the mountains. The Selection is conducted in a "play-off" system, meaning that after each stage, the weakest candidates and those displaying undesirable traits are eliminated." Obviously everyone speaks the same language in Naruto So instead of a foreign language the ANBU should probably be taught things like politics and court etiquet since they have the highest chance to interact with the most important persons from various countries. Honestly, because of what the ANBU does it makes it some ungodly mix between Special Forces/Intelligence Agency/President Security

Sandromanta

We know that ANBU basically acts as the special forces. Given that they are superhuman, the tests should entail testings for rigorous physical and mental stress, including the capacity of withstanding torture in the event that the agent becomes caught and needs to withhold critical information. Furthermore the test should act as trials to see how quickly they adapt and learn new things, in addition to seeing over how good control the agents have over their current set of skills. Additionally, Takuma should be given tests in espionage, information extraction, combat in all aspects, as well as internal motivations, capacity to work through trauma, things like that given the fact that these are critical attributes when it comes to being an anbu agent.

Aybek Khamrayev

I like to think that the ANBU is like the CIA and FBI under the same umbrella. To join the CIA you have to pass a 3 part exam that’s tests that you know the basic Internal Audits, Practicing those internal Audits, and finally to like practice complicated internal audits. So you kinda do that but maybe in one test? And about stealth, information gathering, and finally ‘elimination.’ Probably with a team too against other teams, you don’t often see lone ANBU members.

BestHopes2U

If you want to make it really different from the other exams we’ve seen you could have him submit to a set of extremely powerful genjutsu. That way the exam can take place in the Naruto version of a holodeck. Each test can then take place in wildly different places and circumstances. He could be placed in charge of a battle group during a historical war. Carry out an asasination. Hunt a difficult bingo book target. The tests are no longer limited to what the ANBU can actually create in the real world. Plus using such a powerful technique for the sake of a test would sell just how dangerous and powerful the ANBU are as an organization. To use another Star Trek idea, Takuma could take the Kobayashi Maru. It’s the name for an impossible test. The test taker is put in a no win situation. The actual test is seeing how they react in the face of an inevitable defeat. This could be done in a lot of ways. Forcing Takuma to fight a Jonin. Giving him 24 hours to learn a technique that’s actually impossible. Stuff like that. Mastering a new technique in 24 hours could just be a regular test. You could make it so he has to learn a jutsu with his opposite elemental affinity. Cover him in chakra seals and drop him deep in the woods. Wilderness survival with no supplies and with all of his ninja skills blocked. Have him observe a target for 24 hours and then he needs to abduct them and seamlessly replace them. It’s a test of his observation skills and his ability to keep and maintain deep cover. The ANBU definitely have a lot of deep cover operatives. So watching a civilian shopkeeper, learning his habits/mannerisms/job, then pretending to be him in front of everyone who knows him.

Stephen Nehila

Taking care of a pet for months and forcing him to kill said animal as his final exam. I know that 2 weeks is not enough. But there could be a training period within ambu before sending it to the field. Killing his pet would be a good way to see that he is willing to accomplish the mission. Infiltration missions. Something like finding the stolen object. Endurance and memorization tests. Questions to examine your psyche. You know, like the ones where they find out if you have the makings of a serial killer haha. Code breaking, although they have a department for that. Evaluation of Takuma's teamwork. His ability to adapt to his comrades. Interrogation, I'm really looking forward to seeing how Takuma implements modern interrogation methods.

Anonimacho

The entrance test to SF in my country used to be a week-long trek from point A to point B in the mountains. The pass rate was around 3%. There were strict rules: everyone got the same kit, and bringing any food was forbidden—they expected you to gather it on your own. They made sure you knew there were a limited number of open slots as well to foster some competition ANBU is just ninja SF. One thing about the SF I know of is that they care far more about what's under your dome than other military branches. So, there should be tests for both body and mind, and they should be extremely hard to pass. But once you're in, you're in. You're not a grunt anymore, son! You're SF now! Dust off that hamster wheel, because from now on we expect you to use it effectively. Also, they are far more inclined to cater to the individual needs of their operatives since training and equipping one is costly and time-consuming. Additionally, I’m not sure if the SF/ANBU are as strict, but intelligence agencies in my country that cover what ANBU does have a strict no-drug policy. It doesn't matter if you've taken drugs only once or are an addict. Only a small percentage of the population that NEVER took any illegal drugs can even be considered as prospects. It's just funny considering Takuma likes to smoke up from time to time. But do you want to know what is really scary about trying out for the SF? The interview. You come to the indicated place at a previously agreed time. You sit in front of a stranger—man or woman—and they hook you up to a lie detector. Then, you have to answer questions. The interviewer knows EVERYTHING about you. The questions they ask can make your eyebrows blast off into orbit. For example, Takuma should hear questions like: - "How are your criminal relations with Entomoto? When was the last time you were in contact with him?" - "Since we're on the topic, how is your weed-selling business doing?" - "How would you say the death of your parents in the Kyuubi attack affected you? Does it trouble you still?" - "If given the chance, would you try to avenge your parents?" - "What were your intentions when interacting with the Kyuubi Jinchuriki?" What I'm trying to say is that Takuma should hear questions that will blow his mind and be like "HOW THE FUCK DO YOU KNOW THIS?!" and "Why are you asking me character-defining questions I was too afraid to ask myself?!" Pls don't turn the ANBU into borring as shit silent badasses that complete the mission no matter the cost and blindly follow every order from their superior. fOr kOnOhA i wIlL eVeN aSaSiNate a ChIlD iF I HaVe tO! I've seen it done before and it allways devolves into a cringe fest. What's worse, it's fucking borring and the complete opposite of what real SF are like.

Sandromanta

I think the tests should be real ANBU missions. No test is better than real life situations. Have him infiltrate in an enemy nation government. Assassinate or corrupt people in various organizations. Gather intelligence on a particular shinobi or on anything needed. Pit two forces against each other. Things like that. What better way to see if he fits the workplace?

Fastus

Have them track/capture/assassinate deserters from the steam-frost proxy war as their test. Deserters won't be strong (as they are genins or weak chunins that chickened out) and its a good way to test skills that will be used by ANBU. I think from there, there should be some sort of military camp that lasts a few months as black ops stuff isn't formally taught in the leaf.

Dark Oak

Maybe a situation where he would have to chose between saving one of his Konoha friends (perhaps even Maruboshi) or finishing the mission. Maybe there is a way he could do both too and he would be reprimanded even if he managed to do it. Anbu could require the cooperation of his friends in this scenario to fake it.

Alshinrai

I assume there would be multiple stages of testing. A straight up combat test to see that you can achieve the minimum needed to join Anbu. Some sort of test of cleverness with finding a traitor or imposter in group? Mock mission? with other attendees?

Conor lennon

A flexibility test aka macgyver test. The scenario: you are in a hostile nation and have limited jutsu/ressources and the test would be to simprovise or adapt your limited jutsu so you can complete an objective. He would excel in that test because he has experience in for example adapting the tree walking one. Examples: navigate in complete darkness by adapting a genjutsu into a sensing one. Or improvise the tree walking jutsu into a kinda double jump

Brisyngr

I think skill should be the 1st test, if just to prove to the rest of the ANBU that he can hang skill wise. Maybe a lite version of the Root training. (ever watched Men in Black 1?) Put the prospects in a room all together, everybody wears masks, no one uses real names. Put them into a round robin trying to kill each other and once you have the winners, put them into teams with someone who they really hate (team building prowess). The last part could be an actual REAL mission. Throw them in the deep end. Covert operation - interrogation - assassination, really shady stuff. Have them target a sensitive target (a member of the Fire Daymio retinue or someone that's suspected of being a spy but they're like Flanders [actually a good guy] and they have to kill him/ her just to get them (takuma) dirty. Have to mantain cover at all time, no coms, no support. And then have the mission go tits up. The whole team gets compromised or captured. Takuma has to survive interrogation and not prove that he's not going to betray his team or his village to save himself. The ANBU trials are a great way to present a Kakashi's dilemma (Your team or the mission) and the obvious answer to enter the ANBU would be to sacrifice the team to fulfill the mission. Either way, cheers and good luck

JaegerAeden

Yeahi gues reveal or torture also work but for a ninja I do think assassination is not out of scope especially for turncoats

Lazybeep

You could do something akin the the men in black test where there are some big threatening “obvious” threats that haven’t actually done anything while there’s a much less obvious but more insidious threat to catch.

Jerkface

I do not lile your first core idea. A shinobi can pierce through a transmutation jutsu. Anbu is under direct hokage control. Them asking to assasinate someone for a konhoa citicen is ludicrous. 2. idea: not reveal or die, make it reveal or torture.

Khress

I would put it on either a 3 step trial (storytelling wise) or 7 step trial (to do a whole arc just of ANBU "tests" that end up being the actual ANBU training.

JaegerAeden

Intel gathering is probably garunteed no matter the unit and that often goes hand in hand with infiltration so a test to infiltration a secure facility and secure a scroll seems like a good start. A general skills demo giving potential recruits to show off any skills tgey want where scoring is based on a panel of judges also seems like a good idea. This would also be a great test for takuma specifically given his large range of skills specifically his use of makeup horse riding and other skills that seem minor but would likely impress the judges. Perhaps just straight up torturing recruits until they willingly give up. Guarding a vip and moving him from 1 point to another, and I suppose a combat test of some sort as well

Barney The Dyno

What ANBU needs to see isn’t his physicality or skills (those things can easily be fixed), but to confirm his strategic thinking, allegiance, and mindset. Perhaps placing him under duress (such as making him dodge rapid fire kunai while detailing and changing his plan) could help as well.

Nate Drees

ANBU are meant to complete the mission at any cost. They must follow the orders of their superiors. They must help the land of fire and protect Konoha. In accordance with these principles, I believe the best option is a test that forces Fujin to create a realistic plan of attack for a mock mission within very strict boundaries given by the proctor, all while having the hidden criteria of doing what the proctor believes is best for Konoha in specific points in the mock mission. Within this test, the proctor can only the spot add new bullshit that makes Takuma’s plan bad and make him come up with a second answer.

Nate Drees

I think first and foremost is a test to ensure he can keep a secret this would need to happen before or after the main test so he doesn't know that hes being tested. Think kingsman. As for the actual test that's pretty difficult considering we don't know what kind of unit hes going into and neither does anbu meaning the test should be testing a wide range of capabilities.

Barney The Dyno

I have 2 ideas both revolving around the core theme of loyalty:- 1. Anbu asks him to investigate/assasinate someone close to him(eg. Nenro )for espionage by sending them on a mission together. But in the end before takuma actually commits to killing the person is revealed to be someone under tramsmutation jutsu 2. Takuma is sent to deliver an Intel to an outpost which is marked as sensitive but he is pursued by both enemy ninjas and konoha ninjas(bcz he is marked as a ninja ) who has stolen some sensitive data. In the end when he is captured he has the choice to reveal the intel.or die

Lazybeep

They Can Also make a 3 days hellish endurance training tunned for strongest shinobi. Not allowing rest etc. And by pushing them to the limit i mean some FK Up stuff

Yod

Any decently built military organisation, such as the Konoha military dictatorship, would do regular penetration testing against their own defenses. As the ANBU are also responsible for domestic security, they might offload some of the work unto prospects. An espionage/faux assassination test against your own village, with restrictions on identity and techniques, would make in universe sense. You could also make this a competition, where some prospects are attempting to identity intruders.

Blackguard

They need people to be capable working under LOT of stress. so test for that Can be Made by being put under some nightmarish genjutsu where target had no clue what is going on. And they will push the persons limit

Yod
