Naruto: The Outsider's Resolve: —CODENAME—

Hey guys, Fiction here.

Initially, I wanted to finalise Takuma's "ANBU-codename / animal-callsign" before the training period, but I will be honest:

I have not decided on his codename .

Embarrassingly, I have not even thought about it that much. Strangely, I'm not that invested in this particular decision and was thinking about giving him the name of a niche animal that sounds cool.

So, I thought about taking reading suggestions. Please tell me what you would like Takuma to go by during his ANBU tenure (and the other recruits if you have thoughts about them).

Not everyone can get names like "Lion," "Tiger," or "Eagle," and I don't want to do "Lion 1," "Lion 2," "Lion 3," and so on. So, here are some pointers to consider—

And that's all I can think about when it comes to names.

Go ham.

Comments

When I think of Takuma one animal comes to my mind a Badger

oriol argenso

Its suits him though hes mad intelligent and hes always picking up new skills. Its a very suited name it just sounds kinda lame id look into species of octopus and scientific names to find something cooler but it is a very suitable animal for him

Barney The Dyno

I mean octopus doesn't sound cool so id look into species or scientific derivatives. But the name highly suits takuma not only does it go with his favorite jutsu but it also suits his personality as takuma is both highly intelligent but also the type to have a variety of skills wich the abundance of hands represents quite well

Barney The Dyno

Not at all. It's very meta because while ANBU isn't thinking about Takuma's characteristics to give him his name—the readers have picked up names which match him. I say just suggest a name you want for him

FictionOnlyReader

Does the animal need to somehow relate to style etc? I think the name can be chosen to deliberately confuse enemies. My suggestion is Lyrebird, a bird that has almost perfect mimicry. If an enemy hears the codename they would think Uchiha, which combined with his youth and genjistu would reinforce this

Tanulli

I think you should call him roach, and it can be Takuma’s personal inside joke about not being able to die right the first time.

HYP3R

Would fit with his augmented strength as well

ppman

Yeah that could be funny, was looking at some alternate names for hippos, sea cow or kiboko

ppman

Possibly something to do with hippos? Males normally have scars. Unassuming appearance but a high fatality rate for its enemy. Fits in with earth and water.

that_dude13

It could be "Hopper", and the mask could be a rabbit. They are known for their adaptability. Plus I like the idea that Takuma shows a harmless exterior until he isn't.

Matías Knaus

If you're planning on taking his anbu career in a 'loud assassin' direction, then "kingfisher" or "fisher" would be a good name.

Theo Q.

Mantis shrimp or just shrimp is quite suitable. Octopus is fine too, but it's a bit long to pronounce and tentacles might be not his defining technique.

Kirill Yrchenko

Please not octopus… his eight tentacles jutsu is useful but not good enough to be named around it, I’m partial to the shrimp themed names or cats

Beater

Shako is a good one, nothing hits pound for pound.

The Duke of Nova Scotia

Tiger. Which in truth fits his combat style of, wait wait wait, full bore over aggression, rip you apart with bare hands. Plus there is no other animal that can hold a grudge like he can as the tiger does.

The Duke of Nova Scotia

Fennek

Jan Malcom

i would suggest "ibex", just because I think its neat and would fit well with his stubbornness, dedication to work hard and adaptability. also, they are native to where I grew up.

Christian Geissberger

Vasuki indicus while not quite suitable for takuma himself could be an interesting name for another character

pudge

Octopus

Ivan

I thought about this ever since the ANBU thing first came up, and I thought that jackal would be a perfect fit for Takuma. Takuma is strong there is no doubt about that but I honestly believe that what defines Takuma the most is that he is opportunistic and sly. While he has the strength to take on a group himself, Takuma would be the kind of person that would prefer to get the group to fight each other first if he can, and then pick off the stragglers, The man is pragmatic to a fault. There is also the fact that jackals can hunt both in groups and alone, making then very versatile which fits Takuma like a glove.

quiscon

Raven/ Crow. He has a dark past, dark hair, cynical mind, unexpectedly resourceful and cunning and not to mention a child symbolic of a small animal. These are all traits the Anbu know of. Funny coincidence that a bird is symbolic of Icarus's story, of how Takuma's ambitions supercedes his own capabilities at times. These animals are also known in stories to be all seeing, which Takuma is in pseudo possession of. If Takuma is to learn multiple shadow clone jutsu in the future, it would fit the codename. A 'murder of crows'

shacochan

Kingfish

Uselesshield

as a note it feels weird to bring in names from earth for animals, especially scientific names. or references to some cultural association with an animal. Im in the octopus camp. let our MC join naruto in being named after seafood. also ive seen a lot of lab experiment footage of octopuses, due to their intelligence and expressive eyes. two options: Akkoro is the name of a ainu kamui and could be good for something that sounds eastern. In shinto cosmology, it is known as a healing kami, because it continuously self-amputates and regenerates its limbs. Smoothskin is a type of northern pacific octopus that might get assigned to a young uppity recruit by someone like tapir to play on his scars moniker.

Ao

vote for octopus! heres some footage of an isekai'd octopus https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mnZ9wF-Bv1w

Ao

Im also here for some kind of octopus. they can squeeze into situations where you'd least expect! they also for some reason have a reputation for being shadowy puppetmasters, with their tentacles in many pies. if you want to lean into the genjutsu element id suggest cuttlefish. they can hypnotize crabs! https://youtu.be/rbDzVzBsbGM?si=liFY0oQdljFj6uon&t=117

Ao

Honestly I’ve seen some cool animal names here: Crocodile/Alligator Jackal (Represents cleverness, lonliness, and in Egypt it represents death) Ocelot (though I think it may distract people when reading the story) Wolverine (same thing as Ocelot with it distracting the reader) Owl Lynx Salamander (Might be a weird choice in the Leaf due to the connection with Hanzo the Salamander one of Leaf’s biggest enemies during Second Shinobi World) Mamba (Not sure if Takuma would want a snake code name due to Orochimaru)

Star445

Axolotl would be a cool name

Eric Smith

Snake mask mamba because he definitely has that mamba mentality

theoreticaltirst

Hmm i kind of like some kind of croc, or alligator too. Fits the earth and water jutsu theme, they usually have a ton of scars the tougher and older they get. They use stealth and ambush tactics, hit way harder than their size should indicate (i know saltwater crocs can grow up to giant sizes, but even small alligators hit way harder than some would expect). They don't scare easily, are fierce but protective sobs, and they can sense vibrations when they hunt or track. Also a croc/gator mask would look bad ass :P

ParoxysmDK

I completely agree. Takuma just fits the Wolverine/Honey Badger so well. They're tenacious, fierce little bastards; that are willing to trade wounds. And they simply don't know when to quit. I once saw a video of a Honey badger getting attacked by 4 young adult lions, and it survived simply by being such a vicious little sh*t ^^. Also Wolverines have been known to hunt moose, which are like 20 times their weight class.

ParoxysmDK

I also like this I am Shrimp farmer so I love when people think about shrimp/prawn😊

Nonthawit SAE-HIA

Are you aware of what an enema is lol

Josiah

Ebi— meaning shrimp in japanese. Takuma is a very unassuming person and young but when you fight him, he hits like a bullet shrimp. I was also thinking some kind of octopus for the water tentacles.

Josiah

Shrike Stag Harrier Owl Boar

Brett Labat

SHRIKE - small but METAL bird known as the "butcher bird." I think they impale their prey on spikes on branches like butchers put meat on meat hooks JACKAL - outsider survivor, cunning yet reliant on its pack when needed. They're fahking pests, resilient as hell and hard to put down as a population MAGPIE - ruthless, fierce and territorial "winged vicious cunts" LYREBIRD - known to imitate sounds to decive KESTREL maybe??? Idk LOACH or ROACH (the fish like in witcher) bottom feeder fish adept at survival

Sandromanta

love this cus it really does describe him!!

Arana 1

Honestly Rat would be perfect for him. Takuma focuses on stealth and fights with extreme desperation and brutality when he’s caught in bad situation. Also fun fact rats are very altruistic animals and have strong family/friend bonds.

PyschoPomp

mole

zero1995

Personally, I'd go with some form of nickname for wood or some kind of tree?

Cerberus09

I was hoping for Honeybadger, but after reading this I must say that camel would be better.

MaliMi

Also they have small eyes that make most of them look tired.

Horan

Id also vote for mellivora But to be honest the whole Mustelidae fits him. Most of them have a link with the earth or/the water, are scrapy, brutal, use intimidation or provocation in fights (shit talk no jutsu). They hit higher then their weight class. Are small, and wild ones have lots of scars. Use scent to communicate defend and attack. And good with camouflage ! (Yes even the honey badger !) The honney badger : already described by otter handsome fellows. His less popular cousin is names taxidea, wich is better sounding. The otter is basically a watter honey badger. But are strongly linked with shape-shifting (tentacles ?) (They might be too playful to really fit takuma) The skunk us basically how i see him evolving his genjustu (mist that inflics sight, touch smell genjustsu) The Ictonychinae family, basically skunk/honney badger but with mask like face fur and are striped (really fits well). Theres the grison Look up the Ictonyx or stripped polecat, water, earth, small, striped, masked, smell, agressive and misleading. Thats takuma ! Also there's the Bornean ferret badger, same idea as the polecat but this one lives in trees konoha ! (Good digger and swimer)

Horan

This useless piece of reddit trivia is finally useful lmao. But I have the perfect animal for takuma. Camel Camels are animals famous for holding grudges and seeking revenge. There are stories of them biding there time waiting for an abuser to be alone before killing them, they are actually very very smart animals. With a very lengthy memory. Not only do they have capability to be compassionate, but they are absolutely brutal. Here are just some accounts. A boy in a village was abusing a camel. One day the boy went out of the village with his friends to hang out, it followed him out as it waited for him to be without adult supervision then it pretended to be friendly before crushing his skull. There are many other stories of decapitated riders, trampled riders etc. don't fuck with camels. They are also incredibly resilient, like takuma. They are travellers that can survive in the harshest climates without much rest. Also, they literally embody takumas nature's. Water and Earth. Earth because they live in the desert, and water because of how much they drink and store. It also follows anbus theme of short animal names, anbu animals I think are always one or two syllables. Owl, mon-goose, etc. It's kind of neat, but it makes sense. In the field you don't want long names to communicate, three four syllable names take longer to say. Which might not matter for one person, but on a team it does when you have to convey information to a whole team. I dunno I think camel is a perfect name for takuma. It is kind of simple, but on a way so is takuma, noone took takuma seriously the same way noone really takes a camel seriously. He was fucked with by Kon, (orochimaru maybe?), his academy mates. But camels are deceptively large powerful large animals who you wouldn't think you would regret fucking with. Underestimated.

JonJon

If you'd prefer it to be related to his fighting style, I think 'Shako'--mantis shrimp in Japanese--'Dreamfish'--a type of fish that causes hallucinations when ingested--and Octopus work well. Shako for his chakra augmentation, Dreamfish for his genjutsu, and Octopus for his water tentacles--and they're all aquatic since he primarily uses his water affinity. On the other hand, considering his history in the police force narcotics division, something like 'Hound' or 'Shiba' could also work. I'd suggest Bloodhound, but frankly I feel it has too much gravitas to be associated with a ANBU recruit lmao.

Melon

Also it would be fun to see Takumas anxiety skyrocket over the name.

Ben.K15

Fox: fits Takuma to a T, Both are highly adaptable, Independent, and largely solitary. Both are exceptionally smart, and Takuma is nothing if not cunning. Neither are particularly dangerous in appearance, terribly large, or terribly loud, but instead prefer calm meditated actions and put their survival ahead of anything else. Not to mention the fantastic levels of hearing, it just really is a perfect analogy for him. Just don’t call him Kitsune, or the village might have have a fit

Ben.K15

I like Krait, out of all the suggestions it's the one that has stood out to me the most. The name itself is evocative of a mythical creature like hydra for example. I feel Jose's description matches Takuma's fighting style as well.

josh D huff

Oscolot mostly because I'm a Metal gear fan

Jordan

Tadpole because he is young and has a water/earth affinity

Dark Oak

After checking for non-obvious animals that might fit him here are some suggestions: Osprey: The osprey is a bird of prey known for precision and mastery in catching fish. Its focus and adaptability could reflect Takuma’s dedication and diverse skills. Tarsier: A small, agile primate known for its sharp focus and extraordinary abilities despite its size. This can reflects Takuma's resolve and ability to excel in unexpected ways. Ratel: The real name of the Honey Badger, an animal renowned for its toughness and determination. It's an striking name that captures Takuma’s resolute nature. Grison: A small carnivorous mammal similar to a weasel, known for being resourceful and fierce. It ties into Takuma's unexpected skills and tenacity. Kea: A parrot native to New Zealand, known for its intelligence, problem-solving skills, and persistence. Barbel: A type of freshwater fish known for its adaptability, sharpness, and the sensory barbels it uses to "see" its surroundings in murky water, in a way similar to the Earth Release: Earth Tremor Sense Jutsu. Cicada: Known for its long cycles of development and sudden, impactful emergence, paralleling Takuma’s self-improvement and resolve. Caracara: A bird of prey known for its intelligence, adaptability, and unexpected behaviors, fitting Takuma’s personality. Personally I would go with either Ratel or Cicada, they might be the less exotic names there but the more simple nature fits Takuma quite well.

Javier Ricaurte

If he's going to be placed on a hunting team, Vole is a good pick. It's English, and it's an animal that thrives on eating ROOTs like it's more mythical counterpart. It's also a deceptively bland name, and he uses earth tunneling and misdirection jutsu.

Jiokuy

Joro - type of Asian spider. Overall because of his use use of the tentacle jutsu, I think the mask should be a spider, octopus or squid, maybe been a scorpion of some type.

Ramon Rodriguez

"Kuma" Japanese for bear, mabye to close to Takuma but would fit his chakra augmentation and close combat style

Tolokk

mongoose or honey badger, based on the way Takuma digs into investigations and doesnt give a fuck about taking hits.

xJehova

Gundi, it's an animal most people haven't heard of, but a pleasant name. It's a rodent. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gundi

Fucking Shracc

I like squid, matches his skill set and I haven’t seen it used in other fics

starvingcrow8

Macroderma Gigas or just Macroderma aka the Australian Ghost Bat. I think Bats fit Takuma well considering his enhanced hearing he's trained and his genjutsu usage, I also like the idea that as a reincarnater Takuma is a kind of 'ghost', plus Macroderma sounds sick. Another is Stomatopoda aka the Mantis Shrimp. It's infamous super punch reminds me of Takuma's chakra enhancement technique and his water affinity matches up with its aquatic nature.

Zeroguard

Calf, Doe, Tadpole, Puppy, Kitten, Fawn, Chick, Cub or Hatchling would be able to relate his youth. I think you should try and pick an animal code name that relates to youth.

M.Sully

I second Honeybadger.

MaliMi

Maybe one of the Mustela, like Weasel, Mink, Ermine, Marten, or Ferret might be interesting. They’re unassuming, deadly, and have associations with cleverness which I thought could fit thematically with Takuma as an individual.

Ty Tuttle

1. Honey Badger (also known as Ratel)—> Check out the memes and the fact that even its own predators avoid it. Fits Takuma’s profile of how gnarly/edgy he shows himself to be to people who don’t know him. 2. Mongoose —> Similar to 1st choice but more widely known. 3. Livyatan whale—> Now extinct. Basically the inspiration for the Leviathan (fits Takuma’s water affinity) 4. Salamander —> good on water and land. Fits both of Takuma’s affinities.

GN

Raccoon and badger.

Aske Helsted

'Komodo', 'Scarab', 'Gecko', 'Stag', 'Doe, 'Chimp', 'Moth', 'Goat 🐐', 'Moose' Take your pick

Justa_Tortle

xdd

Eduhund Stein

Raccoon or Pidgeon would be fitting imo

sn0_0ker

Given Takuma's vendetta with the Root, an animal that eats roots could be a good fit if there is one with a cool name. The only decent one that I can think of is Vole. Others like gopher, beaver, or rabbit sound kinda lame

Fern

Shrimp. It works as a reference to his age and his explosive power in battle. Matis shrimp are known for being able to hit the hardest relative to their size and Takuma can hit harder than he should be because his argumentation.

Sean

I think Ocelot, wolverine, wasp dragonfly, Mako (from Mako shark), Marlin would be cool fits

Nathaniel Derrick

Rat - rats are adaptable, they arent special or unique... but they always do their best :D Edit: also pretty sure no ninja would take it :P

Marcin

Beaver, Kingfisher, Ram(male sheep), Badger, Wolverine, Buck, Goat, Adder, Asp, Sparrow, Owl, boar, Basically you google animals by common name and see whatever peaks your fancy. However i would like to say that Kingfisher and Adder are really cool names.

JustShadow

Also, Urva. A genus comprising the asian mongoose.

Fastus

I'm not sure of the exact name but perhaps a type of mockingbird (although that may be better for a Uchiha). I was thinking about his the wide range of skills he has and the ability to pretent to be something else (like the wide range of noises a mockingbird can copy).

Drumic

Unio. A play on words as a Unio is is a freshwater mussel (muscle). Freshwater being very literal as he is a new recruit that prioritizes his water affinity. And muscle going along with his brutal taijutsu. Also this name does sound like a word you’d hear in Japanese.

Rohanbarr

Alpheus is the scientific name for pistol shrimp. Cuttlefish could be pretty cool too. They hypnotize their prey and have tentacles.

Joshua Temblador

First off, I have to say, I’m thoroughly enjoying this story—it’s engaging, well thought-out, and honestly, a treat for someone like me who has a deep appreciation for the natural world. As a zoologist (and a bit of an enthusiast for etymology), I couldn’t resist chiming in on Takuma’s ANBU codename. I think the names Arapaima, Dhole, Okapi, Gannet, and Krait are absolutely brilliant choices. Each one carries a sense of uniqueness and depth that fits the ANBU theme perfectly. For instance: Arapaima – A powerful Amazonian fish, sleek and resilient, it represents strength and adaptability in a way that feels grounded yet distinctive. Dhole – A fascinating species of wild dog; their intelligence and pack-oriented nature give this name a sense of strategy and teamwork. Okapi – Rare, enigmatic, and striking, the Okapi is perfect for someone who works in the shadows but is unforgettable when revealed. Gannet – Known for their precision and speed during dives, this name evokes an air of focus and efficiency. Krait – Subtle but deadly, this nocturnal snake symbolizes lethal precision with an understated elegance. It’s refreshing to see a departure from more generic names like “Lion” or “Tiger” in favor of something so niche and thoughtful. It makes the world-building feel richer and more immersive. I’m excited to see how these choices will add depth to the characters and their masks. Keep up the fantastic work

Jose A. Soto de la Torre

Personally I like the name Octopus (because of his affinity for the water tentacle jutsu) or the name Raccoon for Takuma’s sleepy ass eyes that may be visible from his eye holes lmao.

Intimidating Swan

Omg that's so good. I love having something in reference to him being young. (Vs all the cringe pup/kit shit you see in many fanfics across many fandoms.)

Green0Photon

Also his teammates can call him fry because that’s what young octopuses are called.

Rohanbarr

EmptySurface's Hear The Silence, one my favorite Naruto fics, has Hyena as a pretty main (OC) character. So I don't really love that reuse. Compare that to FOR trying to come up with something particularly unique instead of comparatively standard animal names. Worm and Moth are more unique. Though Worm would be insane (and you could probably pick a specific one). So Moth is pretty good. As someone else said, I like Racoon in aluding to his tiredness. But imho not as unique.

Green0Photon

Names, along with possible deeper meanings Ratel - (a different name for honey badgers, resilience, taking on larger opponents) Coyote - (small animal, adaptability, pack hunting) Raptor - (from predatory birds, precision hunting) Lynx - (stealth and precision) Komodo - (unique and exotic operational methods) Rapax - (Latin word for grasping, rapacious or greedy, sometimes used for predators) Barracuda - (speed based, aggressive marine predator) Caracal - (medium cat, mobility, solitary hunter) Hornet - (aggressive, team-based attack) Raven/Corvid - (Maybe reserved for Uchiha?) Kestrel, Jackel, Mantis

Blackguard

I love this. Somewhat different from mimicry, thinking of how Squids emit ink to confuse enemies. Also aligned with Genjutsu.

Green0Photon

Mongoose, Salamander, (Water) Strider, or Lynx

Fern

Enema it’s a type of scarab beetle I thought it sounded cool

Cursed artichoke

Also related to octopuses is the mimicry that some of them use which can be related to his genjutsu

BB8ALREADY

Hyena, Rat, Raccoon, Worm, or Moth. Don't sure if any were already used. I lean towards Hyena for their intelligence and sounds cool. Supposedly they have complex social groups and out perform chimps in group problem solving.

Tay Rob

I like the Grey owl. They have great camouflage, fly silently, are great predators but don’t seem that scary when you first run into one (like Takuma). Also with grey owl his nickname could be Grey which is also cool. Also Owl is sign of wisdom in some cultures.

CMA27

I really want something to do with the theme of octopus or squid, considering how one of his trademark jutsu is the water tentacle arm things. Not sure of some more fun specific name instead of Octopus, though. Idk any notable species. Unless you do related stuff like Squid, Calamari, Cephalopod, Cuddlefish, Nautilus, and so on. But some don't emphasize the many tentacles bit as much. I do like the tie ins with him looking tired, his scars, and his many extra skills. I'd say the skills and water arms should be priority aspects in what you'd pick.

Green0Photon

Tardigrade would be a good fit considering his past and the signs of the experiments he had been through

Noam Bar

Lynx memorable name and also they're ferocious in a fight like takuma

Will34

Maybe something like "conan" which is celtic for wolf or maybe "finch" which is named after a songbird. (Tbh I just searched up "animal names for boys" on Google and a bunch of options came up)

LOOKOUT

Wallaby because of drugs

Eduhund Stein

Following that, I'd say Ragno is a good name. It's the Italian for spider. I thought about it when he used the water jutsu.

Fastus

Hummingbird?

Jai Behl

Squid, I think my reasoning is self explanatory. If you want a scientific name there are loads of Squids

Well_sorry

5/5? Mantis could be a decent option, the codename 'Orchid' derived from the orchid mantis could funny if you compare the pretty name to the sour face under the mask. Idk man I trust whatever you come up with just go with what feels good.

Dodgy

Banana

Kooooomakimi

Racoon or Panda because he got dark eye shadow.

Xiao

I think a simple " white" would be enough. I'm thinking white from a a white tiger. Pays homage to mythical creatures, but also encompasses the color white. White is the combination of all colors, whereas Takuma has all of the necessary and unnecessary skills. It gives respect to his background and accomplishments for someone at his age. It also could be used as a plot point connecting to his ROOT or orpgan background .

M.S. A.

Honeybadger, most fearless animals on the planet

Mohammed Sheekh

Roach, because he is quite tenacious

Khress

Vespa is also the Italian word for wasp... I always thought it came from that xD

Fastus

Mellivora. It's the first part of the scientific name for Honey Badge. Takuma is a honey badger in all the right ways as he's survived when no else will, and when cornered, he'll keep fighting even if he's outmatched. Mellivora sounds cool as fuck too
