2025-03-03 21:11:13 +0000 UTCThe cast for this film is best explained by this: as Wes Anderson's career has proceeded, *everyone* wants to be in a Wes Anderson film, and they're willing to work at huge discounts to their typical contracts -- often at minimum union scale wages. And his style of diorama-style shots is a trademark. (I loved the description that they look as if they could be illustrations from a book; "Exactly right", as M. Gustave would say!) Lots of symmetrical still-camera shots, lots of dolly shots, etc. My personal favorite Anderson movies in order: The Royal Tenenbaums (with the now deceased Gene Hackman), Grand Budapest Hotel, Moonlight Kingdom, Fantastic Mr Fox, Rushmore, Asteroid City, The Life Aquatic, Bottle Rocket, and well, they're all very good. Some are flawed, more than others. Because it's fun to parody his signature style, and because he is so prolific, I think it's easy to lose sight of him as one of the most gifted and original artists in modern film. But I would say that he deserves to be considered one.
