That makes sense how he was able to grow crops, it would be interesting to see what they tasted like if this was real tho 🤣. oh wow this is based on a book, i might check that out on my upcoming holiday, i was looking for something to read while i was away🤣

One detail that's easy to miss (because we're only shown, briefly, not told) is that the mission brought samples of earth's soil along with them to Mars, for experimental purposes. So Mark mixed that with the Martian dirt, and that's what made farming possible. The book on which this is based has lots of fun details like that. The author admitted to one big liberty at the start of the story, to set it going: Mars does not in fact produce dust storms on the scale we saw. The movie took one more, with Mark "going Iron Man" at the end -- in the book he proposes it and it gets shot down as a cheesy movie-type idea. :) But in fairness, I do think that in a film it's more satisfying if the rescue finishes up with a big visual flourish.
