She was so beyond outmatched by Ashley that it would seem to anyone watching that she could never catch up. But, that's not really the goal, is it? Liara isn't trying to become the soldier Ashley is, she's just trying to be anything but helpless against enemies in close quarters. Any bit of learning she get, anything she gets caught with, that's all knowledge that could save her life later. She is a researcher, after all. She understands how to research.
She would continue to come to Ashley for help and training- and Ashley was more than happy to continue giving her "assistance".
