This 416 page guide aims to help Patrons 'get-to-grips' with the RX1R III menus. This eBook is a First Draft and will inevitably have a few errors and/or typos. Let me Know via the Patreon Message service if you find one.
Note 1 > Because of the short time I have had with this camera I have also had to illustrate the first draft of this eBook with a lot of images that were captured using other cameras, although many were captured with either an RX1R II (using the same lens) or an A7CR (using the same sensor). Given how much the RX1R III has had me scratching my head, as I contemplate the camera setup, I felt that it would be more useful to Patrons to release an early first draft rather than wait a few months for me to capture more photos using the RX1R III.
Although the menus of the RX1R III will look very familiar to an Alpha owner, the 'unique' and sometimes 'quirky' nature of the RX1R III requires a little more thought than one might have first expected.
I have found that when setting up my preferred ‘Camera Settings’ for the RX1R III camera, it required a very different approach, compared to the one I take when setting up my Sony Alpha Interchangeable Lens cameras.
The primary reasons for a change in this camera setup are:
the fixed Zeiss Sonnar lens (no ‘A’ option on the aperture ring), preventing an Aperture value being registered to a memory recall
the ‘Leaf Shutter’ of the Zeiss Sonnar lens. This limits the speed of the shutter at the widest apertures, but removes the need for High Speed Sync (HSS) mode when using flash. This is further complicated because most of the Sony flash units don't fully understand how to work with a camera that does not need to use HSS (the HVL-F60RMII being one exception, but only if it is running the latest firmware).
the lack of ‘SteadyShot’ for stills (In Body Image Stabilization or IBIS). The default configuration of the ISO Auto Minimum Shutter Speed sees the shutter speeds slowing down to a point that would inevitably lead to camera shake in many instances. We therefore have to use workflows that work around this problem.
the lack of a Stills, Movie S&Q switch/dial means Movie settings need to occupy one of the three registered settings for anybody who intends to use this camera for Movies as well as Stills.
In making use of the Memory Recall (MR) settings on the RX1R III camera, I had to carefully consider how owners of the RX1R III camera could quickly recall shooting workflows for very different workflows, e.g., 'Street, 'Flash' and 'Movies'. This approach replaces my PAL workflow that many Patrons will be familiar with. Some of the settings used in these PAL memory recalls are inappropriate for the RX1R III, e.g., There are probably very few RX1R III users who will use this camera to shoot Action/Sports. I don't expect many Street photographers will use the memory recall 2 or 3 but it is handy to have these settings stored - just in case).
Note 2: I am currently in conversation with the software engineers to see how the menus can be improved for a future firmware update. This eBook may change if, and when, this eventuates.
This 416-page eBook outlines custom key, custom dial and custom Fn menu settings and the settings I register to the memory recall settings of the camera. These camera settings can be loaded manually (using the tables of settings outlined in the eBook) or via the CAMSET (camera setup file) I make available on this Patreon support service (check out the CAMSET collection).
The Contents section of the eBook uses hyperlinks to help you navigate the book and the Adobe Acrobat Reader application you will be using to read the book allows you to search the contents.
Note > If you find an error in the eBook please let my admin team know, via the Patreon message service, and I will endeavour to fix it as soon as possible. If, after reading the eBook, you need individual guidance to help you master the camera or the craft of creating images then join me on the Premium Plus Q&A forum where I will provide you with one-on-one support.
