Process Post - Nurgle Cultists [Warhammer 40k: Darktide]

Happy Wednesday, have a Nurgle process post! Here's my step-by-step progression from thumbnail sketches to final, ft. some detail shots at various points of completion, as usual 😊

Rambling time: This image set is def tied with my Kar'niss piece for most ambitious/detailed composition from this year. I might be a masochist. At least, that's part of it, and I'm also eternally a sucker for detailed work. Complexity calls to me like a siren song, and notably, it gets a LOT louder when I'm craving novelty. All this is to say, I'm super proud of how this piece turned out, but it also served a greater purpose by reminding me I'm overdue for a skill level-up. I need a shot to the arm that isn't self-medicating with super complicated compositions 💀💀💀 (I say, as if I'm capable of resisting the urge regardless)

Anyway - I had some really great reflection time after this piece where I went over the last few years of my art, wrote down some artist influences and things to study, set some intentions for future artwork, etc etc, and I'm super excited to put that all to good use. I'm sure I'll have some more bloviating on what I'm learning or trying out for future process posts, so get stoked for more walls of text, lolol 😉

FYI
: I have a collection of all my previous WIP previews, process posts, and tutorials HERE!

Also! I shared a detailed tutorial for my overall process HERE back in June 2024, so check that out if you want specific insights into how I work in Procreate! I've made some smaller tweaks to my process since then, so I may do another updated tutorial this year, but the big stages/general approach still applies.

In any case, I’m very happy to answer process-related questions in comments or DM (I like to yammer about art stuff 🤭) so don’t be shy if you’re curious about anything I haven’t gotten into!

Oh absolutely - I use references almost every time! I have a massive hoard of screenshots from porn videos etc that I've sorted by genre/pose. I usually combine reference images with invention/drawing from memory, and work off 3 or 4 references images to create a single unique scene and help me make choices when I'm in the composition/thumbnail sketch stage. I also have a poseable hand model on my desk that I use to help with tricky angles etc! I use photo references almost exclusively, I usually only use 3D models for complex objects, since the posable ones for people usually are too stiff/don't convey the right weight bearing etc and they just feel clunky to me, haha. As for artist influences... hoo boy lol, it's a lot!! and it's pretty scattershot. There's some artists I've set aside because I like their compositions, some because I like the way they draw dick veins, some because I like their use of color, or I like the way they approach sketches, etc etc. A lot of them aren't even smut artists! Some notable NSFW artists that I keep coming back to though are CyanCapsule and Sabu, particuarly the way they draw spit and fluids. But even that feels like an inadequate explanation, because it's specific things about their approach to one specific element that intrigues me, but I don't want to emulate their styles, if that makes sense😂 Now that I'm back in that headspace though, I might do a more comprehensive breakdown of how I study / take inspiration from lots of different sources as a longer form post, so forgive me for the superficial (yet somehow still long-winded) response for right now 🤭

I am curious if you ever use references, or 3D models, especially for difficult poses or lots of characters at once. And if alright to ask, what artist influences have caught your eye?
