BendyVR Early Access 0.2 (Chapter 2)

Its a bumper Sunday from Team Beef! Dr. Beef just dropped a new and improved JKQuest. Bendy is not to be outdone and follows close on Kyle's heels.

This one took a lot longer than expected, as there was quite a few fundamental things that needed fixing prior to release on top of the Chapter 2 specific fixes. Add onto that, maybe 3 show-stopping bugs during Release Candidate testing. Famous last words but I hope that Chapter 3 and beyond is simply play-testing and improving some animations. I would hope Chapter 2 -> Chapter 3 is much shorter than 1 -> 2.

All of Chapter 2 is now playable. Much like the first release you will get a black screen at the start of Chapter 3 (without any indication other than a message on your PC monitor). Its pretty obvious where the end of the Chapter is though. Much like Chapter 1, you can speed run this in about 10 minutes, but took me probably an hour first time around.

Your game will have been saved! When I release the next version you can carry on from exactly where you left off.

(A quick note on that... which I found out. If you use the "Select Chapter" options from your save game, it won't actually save any progress, so if you are half way through Chapter 2, and then use "Select Chapter" to start over and get to Chapter 3, it won't have saved anything. This is core game behaviour and nothing to do with the VR mod.)

Changelog:

> Added proper room-scale. The player now should follow you across the room. Also no more falling through floors. Only one downside to this method is walls will push back if you try to peer through them. I've made the player character as thin as possible so you can get close to things.
> Fixed HUD remaining in place when user physically rotates in real life (this was a PITA. Meet me for beers sometime and I'll tell you my war story of how difficult this was to get working! Ahhh... flashback...  inexplicable overridden VR camera offset)
> Fixed HUD size across SteamVR resolutions. This fixes the issue of subtitles not readable that some people saw in Chapter 1.
> Fixed Strafing (sometimes it seemed reversed or exhibiting some strange behaviour - I was surprised more people didn't hit this issue).
> Fixed issue with hand disappearing after losing axe
> Fixed cross-eyed effect in death screen
> Fixed one scene in chapter 2 where positional was lost
> Fixed issue with missing decals throughout chapter 1 and 2.
> Fixed Chapter 2 opening scene (Freeroam camera)
> Repositioned / Rescaled Audio Logs / Objectives and Subtitles to be more readable
> Fixed issue with Axe still appearing in right hand when in left handed mode (you still need to set left handed before you start the game in the advanced menu)
> Fixed Title Screen Image scaling

Known Issues / Future Work:

> Chapters 3 - 5
> Replace hand models / show hand on axe
> Change Action prompts to match SteamVR Input
> Hurt Overlay is still ugly. Replace with something less ugly.
> Allow left hand switch mid-game
> Opening Loading Screen has a weird huge background.
> Chapter 2 opening still shows the user at the floor very briefly
> You still cannot get back to the main menu. If you do this it will load your first save, but a lot broken. If you wish to exit, use the SteamVR menu (and restart).
> Possible issue with reduced speed when colliding - not yet able to replicate and could have been fixed with roomscale.

Any suggestions please fire them my way!

Install Instructions:

Install Instructions are as before. It doesn't matter if you have the mod installed already, follow the same procedure (skipping step 1)

1) You must have the full game installed. We recommend Steam. It should work on other version, but I haven't checked. I would suggest first running it in pancake mode and setting the resolution to 1920x1080 and Full screen. The rest of the options you can change from within the app when the port is installed.

2) Download the attached file and extract the contents anywhere on your computer. I.e. into a folder on the desktop.

3) Find the Bendy and the Ink Machine Full Game directory.

Example: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Bendy and the Ink Machine".

"Bendy and the Ink Machine.exe" is inside this directory.

Drag the Bendy and the Ink Machine.exe file, and drop it on top of BendyVRInstaller.exe.

You should see a command line window. In the end it should say "Installed successfully, probably".
Press any key to close this console.

4) Launch via Steam and it should be good to go.

Couple of notes in terms of the installation:

Steam will still think its not a VR game. If you launch the game when SteamVR is running you will get an warning message. Just click OK and it will launch correctly. This will fix the game as a VR one, and you will not be able to launch pancake.

To uninstall go to the Bendy directory and delete:
/BepInEx
Bendy and the Ink Machine_Data/Plugins
and then run a validate files via Steam.

Controls

I've attached a default SteamVR Input for each of the main PCVR headsets. However I was only able to test with Quest 2 (via Link / Air Link). You should be able to see the mapped controls via SteamInput and showing on the controllers. Please let me know if Vive Controllers or Knuckles work and if you have a better default binding, I'd love to have it.

Basically (Quest 2 / Rift S controls):

Non Dominant Hand:
Joystick = Move
Joystick Click / Grip = Run
Y = Pause Menu

Dominant Hand:

Joystick Left / Right = Smooth Turn / Snap Turn
B = Interact (Holding this will show you the "laser" beam selecting the highlighted object. This is based on Dominant Hand position, not Head Gaze)
A = Jump

When you get the axe, it is motion controlled (although you currently need to press Dominant Trigger to clear the message).

Settings

VR Settings

You can find VR Settings in the Advanced Menu (via Main Menu or Pause). Everything there should work. I've not fully tested Left Hand mode, but if you want to play with this make sure to select prior to starting the game.

Performance

You want to aim to get a smooth framerate. The game will run best if you turn off all the optional effects (Anti-Aliasing / Depth of Field / Bloom / Ambient Occlusion), so you have quite a few options to get to a reasonable frame rate (in addition to the graphic quality setting and Steam resolution). Ambient Occlusion does have some small artifacts which are different in each eye.

Comments

Great! Chapter 3 dropping soon!

It works for me now... Thank you for the updated file! VR makes it so much more intense. Love it.

Hi, here is perfect for feedback. Glad you are enjoying it. I played a good hour of Chapter 3 today, and oh man, I am really enjoying this game. I suspect that me reducing the radius of the Player Controller (to allow roomscale to get as close as possible with the wall) is creating these situations. I don't see a "good" solution other than to not do that. The ideal situation is to allow it up until the boundary and the decouple the camera, but honestly the math behind that is tricky and I am just going to end up creating more problems. In the chapter 3 update dropping soon, I'll leave the radius as default and people can let me know if this feels too restrictive.

Hi BaggyG! Thank you - awesome :-) I think I found a trap in the room with the creature which holds the 2nd valve in the generator room. When I was walking around the right generator and was very close to the switch, I "fell" inside the wooden border of the generator. My view angle reduced to ~20cm above the floor and I was unable to get out. Nothing helped, I had to quit the game (with inside game menu) and restart again. Happened twice until I walked with more space around the generator :-) Otherwise everything was good. Quest2/Win10. Should I've posted this here or better on discord? Thanx & best regards Edit: I played the recent BendyVR Chapter 2 Hotfix

Worked well! I finished chapter 2 👍

Tomo

Makes sense... I did go to the left when running away. I was in panic haha.

Yes, that's been reported on the Discord. Just testing now and I'll release a hotfix today. Apparently only happens if you've gone off-center.

I was good until the end of chapter one where I was escaping... I fell through the floor then it just stayed black and I had to restart. I'll try again later though and let you know.

Will do.

Hopefully you have more luck with this one. Write me if not.

Thanks! Can't wait to jump in.

No, just this file. It contains everything.

Question... should I reinstall chapter one and this file? I uninstalled chapter one after having problems getting to work well for me.
