Prepare to enter the Academy

So here it is, the post that we imagine many of you have been eagerly awaiting... the announcement of a playable early access in-development-still build of Jedi Knight: Academy!

The culmination of many hours of work (with plenty more to come yet!), we hope you enjoy this first glimpse at Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy in VR. A lot of the functionality that was implemented for Outcast was able to be brought over to this branch of the engine and worked (mostly) off-the-bat, but some changes were needed for some pieces, some parts are just different (some of the saber stuff for example, given JK:A's increased range of saber styles, hilts etc) and a lot of things needed rework.

It probably comes as no surprise that there are issues as this is early access; some of them are game breaking in places (i.e it will stop you proceeding), but as before, half the fun of being Patrons (we hope) is being able to watch the port develop over time, JK:O is a long way from where it was when the very first EA build of the demo dropped all those months back!

Not only does this now allow you to play JK:A as well as JK:O, but there have been further improvements to JK:O as it draws close to its final state for a public release in the near future:

• Application now fully renamed to JKXR, the companion app is also updated to support this
• A set of fully modeled Jedi Outcast VR weapons - Huge thanks to Vince Crusty and Elin for producing this high quality VR weapon pack. We have been blown away by how good these new weapon models look in VR, they are also available in JK:A as the majority of weapons are the same (the additional ones will hopefully be fully modeled in the future)
• The gesture based force push and pull work a lot better, push away with your palm out to trigger push, and pull towards you with your palm in to trigger a pull. This ensures far fewer false positives as you can trigger the force you intend without triggering the other one by accident.
• Stun Baton is now a melee weapon - give those Storm Troopers a good old cattle prod bash, that'll show 'em
• Quick Save/Load - put your offhand over your shoulder (like reaching into a backpack) when you feel a haptic blip, press A/X to save and B/Y to load the quick save, useful!
• Patched the helpful "usable object" hint logic from JK:A back to JK:O makes it more obvious when something can be interacted with! (Thanks to MuadDib for this!)
• A huge number of helpful additional code submissions from our friend MuadDib (gesture use improvements, menu cursor improvements, security camera improvements and more!)
• Various bug fixes for odd behaviour, wonky aiming, crashes, font scaling etc

Please see links provided at the bottom of this post for details of how to install on your Quest or Pico.

The root folder of the app on your Quest/Pico is now JKXR (rather than JKQuest) and under there, after you have run the application once, you will find JK2 and JK3 folders each containing a 'base' folder. It is into that base folder that you need to copy the game assets pk3 files from your PC installation. You can copy content from the previous JKQuest folder (saves should transfer ok too), however, please don't copy any of the config files from the previous version, much better that you let the app create them with the new default configuration. Furthermore, do not copy or use any weapon packs you may have had installed as these are no longer needed. Our recommendation is you only copy the game assets files and any saves if you want them, and let the app create and copy the rest for you.

The companion app has also been updated with support for both games, as long as all the appropriate pk3 files are in each folder they will show up in the companion app as available to play. So please ensure you update the companion app to the latest version.
