Thank you so much for your support here on Patreon! πŸ’•

You'll need to sync up your own copy of the episode in order to watch along with me. Open 2 windows, one with the reaction and one with the video, then arrange them how you see fit!

I am Norwegian, sometimes it runs faster and to make it synced try to set the video to 0.95 speed. If it runs slower, set the video to 1.05 speed. Hope it helps! πŸ’•

[FULL REACTION] Dances With Wolves (1990)

Comments

When they made this movie, they had a lot of trouble casting the Sioux characters. Graham Green (Kicking Bird) is Canadian and Wes Studi (the bald Pawnee warrior) is Cherokee from Oklahoma. They could not find any who spoke any dialect of the Sioux language, and going to reservations in Minnesota and the Dakotas, they could not find any non-actors who spoke Sioux who were under 60yo. The language was no longer in use among the younger Sioux, even just at home. Eventually they wrote the dialogue in English and asked some of the elders to translate it, then had the actors memorize the lines phonetically. Additionally, none of the actors cast to play the Sioux knew how to ride a horse or use a bow. They ended up filming the close-ups with dialogue while sitting still on their horses, and all of the riding scenes are filmed at a distance with White stunt riders instead of the Indian actors. A lot of them were teenagers from a youth group called "Westerneers" from Colorado, Wyoming, etc. that focuses on horseback riding (kind of like 4H or Scouting).

I love that quote from Ten Bears! That must have meant a lot to Dances with Wolves. Also, Native Americans now celebrate Indigenous People's Day rather than Columbus Day. After all, how can you celebrate a person who "discovered" a land where people already live, and was discovered by them many thousands of years before.

Dances with Wolves (1990) [Won 7 Oscars including Best Picture and Best Director (Costner)]. The theatrical cut is best for a first watch. As you noted, the movie had subtitles when Sioux was being spoken, which was quite a bit -- I am sure that helped. Plus, you seemed to be taking in the English just fine. I agree that scene of Two Socks being shot is incredibly agravating and sucks big time. The John Dunbar (Dances with Wolves)/Wind in His Hair arc is one of the best arcs of all time. Further, I like the overall transformation of John Dunbar. Kicking Bird: "I was just thinking of all the trails in this life, there is one that matters the most. It is the trail of a true human being. I think you are on this trail, and it is good to see." Ten Bears: "You are the only white man I have ever known. I have thought about you a lot. More than you know.... The man the soldiers are looking for no longer exists. Now, there is only a Sioux named Dances With Wolves. Let's smoke awhile." Europeans/European Americans were not the greatest for native Americans. Ten Bears: "They take without asking." I don't think Columbus Day is a big celebration for native Americans.

Thank you for watching a movie that I like so much! I loved your reaction to it. It was a good watch. I think communication is such an important part of this story. It just makes me think about how many wars in history could've been avoided if we just took the time to listen and learn from each other. A lot of people are too quick to judge and act out of fear and hate. And it still goes on to this day. I think we need to put our differences aside and look at people (and be accepting of them) for who they are. I am Native American, but I'm from a different tribe than the Sioux nation (who were portrayed in the movie). Our cultures are different, but I'm sure we still see eye to eye when it comes to family. Family is important. And in my family, you could be from a different part of this world and still be considered a part of our family. The elders are always the ones who are highly respected because they are the wisest. When we have a family gathering, the elders would always have the last word and everyone would stay quiet and listen. They have a lot to teach us. My grandmother would always teach us that we are all one in this world, and that includes plants and animals. She would also say that we shouldn't keep taking from this world, and that if we do take something, then we should also give something back (a good trade). Anyways, sorry for rambling on, but this is just a little in-depth view of what it's like in an indigenous culture.

Yay, putting on your reaction now. Glad you reacted to the theatrical version. No speed adjustment needed for my stream of the movie on Amazon Prime in the US. I guess that makes sense, as you are streaming from Buffalo via VPN. There is subtitles on Amazon Prime. By the way, those white headphones look good.
