[FULL REACTION] Flags of Our Fathers (2006)

Comments

Why yes this movie is based off true events, there is a book called "flags of our father's" written by James Bradley son of John "Doc" Bradley. Recently in 2020 the Marine Corps did an investigation of the flag raising and found that it was a man Harold Schultz raised the flag instead of doc and it appears that he survived the battle and lived a long life well into 1995 never admitting he did it. The radio that was playing was Japanese broadcast made by a of women nicknamed "Tokyo rose" a was Japanese American ( Iva Ikuko Toguri D'Aquino) who was more or less held captive and force to play broadcast reason the marines and navy men listened to her wasn't for the propaganda most vets later said that they learned to toon her out, it was really for the music she played was considered better then the stations they got And for the beach setting you'll find out in letters but a year before the battle the Japanese dug in and made the island a fortress. Another thing that made iwo jima special was the sand it wasn’t normal sand but volcanic ash so men and vehicles would start to sink and effectively get bogged down hence why the Japanese waited. And suffice to say they did not over exaggerate the size of the fleet and men, at this point of the war US industry and manpower and reached its peak and at iwo jima we invaded with 3 full division the 3rd, 4th, and 5th marines (the 3rd marines were supposed to be for reserves but due to losses they were also put into action) but total number of ships was 450, with 60,000 men The planes landing on iwo jima was basically the goal from the start. to capture the airfields to not only allow emergency runways but to cover the invasion of Japan. To explain alittle at the end james and john had a falling out later in life so near the end they made up and thats when james started learning about his dad's history. And as of today both flags raised are on display in the National Museum of the marine corps in Triangle, Virginia which i have seen (the first flag is pretty small, seconds alot bigger). So after the war the US occupied and used iwo jima as base not really allowing visitors to the island, but in the 80s it was returned to Japanese and they have allowed small groups to tour the island and were that small memorial you saw at the island the spot were the flags were raised and as groups of visitors (mostly military personnel) visited the spot they started putting their dog tags on the memorial to honor the fallen The Japanese have a small memorial opposite the US one. Im also glad to see you stuck around watched the credits showing pictures of the real men and battle, often times we forget about these movies is the cost and sacrifice our grandparents made and seeing that reminds to never forget that. While letters is better paced and timeline is alot more focused, i prefer father's as the theme and Emotional aspect is what really gets to me and after reading the book puts alot of perspective of what those men went through for such a tiny island and how horrible the mainland invasion of japan would have been. i also recommend the documentary "He who has seen war" its much like "we stand alone together" it goes even more into details about both series vets and how they handled coming home from the war.

- In the production credits in the beginning of the movie, Steven Spielberg is the "S" in "Dreamworks SKG", "Amblin Entertainment" is also Steven Spielberg, and "Malpaso Pictures" is Clint Eastwood. Whenever you see those, it gives a clue as to who was involved in making the movie. - The music was composed by Clint Eastwood and his son Kyle Eastwood. Some of the music was performed by Kyle Eastwood. - The US Marines do not have any medical personnel. All of their doctors, nurses, orderlies, and field medics are provided by the US Navy. Since the medics are from the Navy Medical Corps, they are called "Corpsmen", not "Medics". Corpsmen who are liked by the marines that they serve with are affectionately called "Doc". - The dogs (mostly dobermans and German shepherds) were on Iwo Jima as military working dogs, mainly as security to alert US forces if Japanese were trying to sneak into the American positions. - You asked if you had seen flamethrowers in movies before. You saw them used in the opening battle of "Saving Private Ryan".

"Letters From Iwo Jima" (2006) is not a sequel. It is the story of the battle told from the Japanese point of view. Clint Eastwood directed both movies at the same time while he had the opportunity to be on Iwo Jima, which is now a Japanese military property closed to the public. The script for "Letters From Iwo Jima" was written by an American woman of Japanese descent. The dialogue is in Japanese with English subtitles using Japanese actors, and Clint Eastwood directed with the assistance of a translator. The Japanese commanding general is played by Ken Watanabe, whom you saw as the Japanese warlord in "The Last Samurai".
