“That doesn’t make any sense,” the clinical tech replied, shaking her head and going back to the spreadsheet on her tablet.
“I agree it sounds impossible, Marcia,” her blonde coworker agreed, tapping her own tablet to pull up some of Subject MM-1A’s historical data, “but why would Nadia make that up?”
“Maybe it was the friend, Subject 14a, this, uhh…”
A few taps on a screen.
“…Stevens, Shanette Stevens. Maybe she was embellishing, or had misheard, misseen. Knocking over clothing racks in a department store with her voice? C’mon.”
“I know it’s a second-…or, like, third-hand story, but remember what her plethysmography was like last time?”
“I know, I know,” the young, dark haired woman answered, pushing her dark-rimmed glasses back up into place and recalling MM-1A’s lung volume. This was too much, too weird. Carnegie Mellon hadn’t prepared her for all this…intrigue. She was good with numbers, but not this shit.
“Don’t you think we should investigate? Or tell Kristina?”
Marcia replied quickly. “No…no. We don’t say anything to Dr. Zhestakova yet. Let’s, uh…”
Marcia considered the options. They could bring MM-1A in…or they could ignore it. The idea of bringing them in had her in shivers. The last time MM-1A had been in the lab she’d made it abundantly clear she didn’t want to be here, that she wanted to be with him. They were still fixing the crack in the ceiling, and the containment lab was made of strong, military-grade shit. But she knew what the handbook said and what might happen to the whole team of them if they broke protocol.
“Fine,” Marcia finally decided, “call her in.”
