You just blew my mind with something. I commented on how great it was seeing so many young actors earlier in their careers because I recognised so many faces, even if I couldn't place them - Giancarlo Esposito being one of them. As soon as you said "villain", it hit me who he was! The fact that so many careers exploded from this one film I think speaks a lot to the importance and significance of this movie. Thanks for breaking it down for me! I totally agree that any movie that makes you think and question topics is the result of good art. Which this was. The crazy thing about this movie is that it truly feels like a time capsule. The vibe, the feeling, the look... all of it. At the SAME time, it's also shockingly still so relevant today.

Just so you know, you’re right to be confused. There is no easy answer to anything. It’s an outburst of violence and with no way to get justice for Radio’s murder from the cops they move to the next target which isn’t logical, but that’s how riots and violent outbursts happen. It’s a tragedy all around. They hurt themselves by removing an institution they care about, Sal hurt himself by not trying to be welcoming at all to the neighborhood he’s in or the community he’s in, and Mookie hurt himself by destroying the one place that employed him, that he really needs. The whole thing is also representative of how even on a good day, where kids lives are being saved, people are falling in love, or just trying to do their jobs, things can come to a boil real quick. Even 36 years later this movie still feels resonant with today’s politics and culture. I genuinely think it’s one of the most important American films ever made. The fact you have questions and want to talk about it after is why it’s so strong. Also shout out to Giancarlo Esposito as Buggin’ Out. I really wish he could get away from playing the villain in everything and do something fun like Buggin Out again.
