I did catch the giant spider in the wide city shot, but kinda just chalked it up to cool visuals instead of connecting some dots - so in fairness, I did miss the implication. I do like that theory and it makes *some* sense. The one thing though is that in the opening scene, his mom leaves him a voicemail talking about his new apartment and asks how he can live like that which implies that what we see of Adam outside of the classroom has at least some truth to it. So maybe he has an upcoming role as a college professor that he's taken too far? And that's why his wife says "I think you do" when he says he doesn't understand what's happening. Every time I come up with a theory, there's something that prevents me from fully getting on board. I definitely need and want to rewatch this one.

This movie made me feel stupid the first time I saw it, and is still challenging. The thing I missed most the first time through is looking at the spider imagery throughout. The spider at the show, the power lines of the city looking like webs, the woman with the spider head in the dream, the pattern of the window of the car after the crash, and of course the the last scene. One thing I missed the first time, and you did not react to at the time, was the giant spider looking thing stalking through the city at the 1:01 mark in the movie. These seem to show the ways that society (and in particular relationships) can make us feel trapped. One theory is that the main character (singular) is having something of a crisis and mental breakdown. He is a teacher (Adam Bell) who had an affair with a student (at that hotel), whom he still fantasizes about. Most of what we see of his teacher life outside the classroom is fantasy. Mostly he wants to think of himself as his (aspirational job) actor persona. When he is forced to confront himself he takes those parts of him that are pulling away from his married life and tries to kill them off. Still feels like there are holes in this theory, but covers much of it. Most theories I have heard tend to only work if you ignore this piece or that of the movie.

That's actually insane to have made all those movies (bangers, no less) in the span of 3 years. Genius gets thrown around a lot but I think it's appropriate in this context. I haven't seen Dune yet - people seem to appreciate it. But I get the whole being trapped with the studio now... it got cancelled after only one season but did you catch The Franchise on HBO last year? It was Armando Iannucci latest project that parodies exactly this.

Villeneuve is so fucking good but he's another one of these directors who got sucked into this bullshit franchise sci-fi machine and he's basically out of commission until it's done. He made Prisoners, Sicario, Arrival, and this in the space of 3 years, and now we have to sit through a literal decade of dogshit Dune sequels before he gets released by the studio and starts making his own movies again. The same thing nearly happened to Rian Johnson, he had Brick, The Brother's Bloom, and Looper, all bangers, and then the Star Wars machine came a-knocking and that was nearly a wrap. Colin Trevorrow (Safety not guaranteed has you written all over it, incidentally), same thing. It's a total drag.
