Updates! Stream, Crafting, Rangers, and Spells!

Stream Tomorrow

I will stream, talking about the crafting system and a little about the math and spreadsheets behind it and what I am working on, tomorrow (Friday)

Friday 1PM PDT HERE: https://www.twitch.tv/kibblestasty

Time Zones: 1 PDT = 4 pm EDT; 8 pm UTC. Though really, I'd just recommend you Google it... more likely to get it correct than I am :D It's roughly 12 hours from when I sending this out.

There is a stream notification role on the discord if you want a 1 hour heads up for when it'll start, and I'll ping the discord when it starts.

Spells

I have some boring generic spells for you.

...no, really, that's sort of the point of them. All joking aside, this has been a bit of a side project for while that's been stepping recently as more gets added to it. One of the most common issues I see is players that want "ice" spells or "force spells" being frustrated by the fact that D&D 5e generally only really gives Fire spells with any frequency. You can solve this just by swapping the damage type, but if you know me, you'll know I view that as a bit of a hollow solution. It's what I used to do - it works, it just doesn't.... feel great. Everyone knows the deal, and it feels like a cold damage fireball rather than an artic blast.

So I set out make 3 spells for ever every elemental type from spell levels 1-5. That's a lot of spells, and I'm not there yet, but I figured I'd share what I have so far as they are out in the wild and being tested in my game and a few other. Once they are a bit more solid, they are going to go into the spell compendium as the largest addition to it's gotten yet. We will still see more spells normally roll out, but I do think this will be a helpful selection to folks that want spells that follow their elements and provide simple, straightforward, thematic tweaks to the exist formulas that make sense for the elements.

Here's the current Draft:

Rangers

So Rangers are a bit overdue; I was have some trouble with them, but here's the latest version of them. This is a few drafts in as I looking around for what I felt fit best here; after a few false starts, I think these are probably on the right track even if they both probably will need a few revisions before being finalized (of course).

Ranger: Mind Hunter

Deciding what aspects of Psionics to represent with Ranger took quite a while a few tries. Telepathy was on the of the first I tried, but tried a few more after before circling back to it... in a round about way. This started with more integration as a Consumption based on, but as the mechanics evolved I decided it made a lot more sense to use Telepathy here, and just take a darker take on it and keep a few elements of Consumption:

Ranger: Specialist

This likewise was a bit tricky; originally I tried a bit more of a gun-ranger and a bit more of a weapon-ranger, but neither quite worked out - the ranger just isn't quite the right chassis for either of those. But circling back to an idea I had a bit ago that Arcane Archer as a Ranger makes a lot of sense, I do a more tech-spin on that, a ranger that specialized in innovative ammunition that does special effects - after all, that's a fairly popular archetype that's not fully represented well anyway currently, and does better fit the ranger chassis. I think it still needs a bit of tuning but I think this the route that helps it stay unique enough from Artificer, Gadgeteer Rogue, and Tech Knight, carving out its own niche.

Updates aren't massive, mostly focused on the intro and the harvesting/looting/gathering tables, which have been retuned based on initial feedback to be a bit more clear as well as give players more options.

They've also been expanded to more CRs and levels.

Poisoncraft has gotten an update, and there's a new model from it that will be propagated to all the branches in time: Expertise with tools DOES apply to crafting check (which has always been the case, but is clarified now) but DOES NOT apply to the DC of the resultant item where it has a DC; the DC of the resultant item is now the crafters proficiency + attribute modifiers for the craft (which was not the original intention for some of them, but I think most people already played that way and it will now be codified and unified across all branches, clarified further in future updates as I reword all the branches to be more clear there). Some items (like knockout poison) will probably be raised in difficult and expense to make.

Playtest Packet

From here I will be focusing on the playtest packet for a bit. This will probably go out early next week. This will be a packet of the Inventor (Artificer), Psion, all the subclasses we've had so far, and crafting... in the broadest and loosest of terms, the nebulous cloud of content that is being refined into the Compendium. Along with that will come a survey for feedback (perhaps 2; one for people that read through and have thoughts, one for people that playtest it). This will also be when the chosen one poll for the compendium will go up. The playtest packet and survey will be for all patrons and kickstarter backers, the chosen one poll will be for all kickstarter backers.

So... tons of stuff is happening, lots of art is coming, new content, playtesting is already heavily underway... lot of fronts are open right now, but progress is good.

Thanks!

Hopefully this comes late enough none of you think its an April Fools bamboozle! Hope your D&D Games are going good, and you'll be seeing a lot of stuff coming up!
