Armor System (Ready)

Hi!

This first iteration of the Armor System is now completed and I made a small chart to highlight how the system works.

Here's the main elements:

I'm pretty happy how this system turned out design wise, I think it's easy to understand when it comes to UI and still provides complexity and requires some level of ammunition knowledge to equip correct level of protection for certain maps / situations.

These protection / weapon penetration levels are also designed in a way that I can utilize those values for multiple other features in the future like material based bullet penetration.

Well like mentioned this system is based on that NIJ classification and it quite clearly separates those specific AK-rounds from that NIJ III class, so I just have to trust those sources that have actually tested those. You obviously have more weapon knowledge than me when it comes to these ammunitions, so if you have a NIJ-related source / link that provides some updated info, I'm more than happy to correct that since it would require changing just few lines of code.

I know that 7.62x39mm isn't a submachinegun round, but that's what some say because the AK was intended to replace the PPSh-41 and because it doesn't have a very flat trajectory, losing its energy rather quickly over distance. (I own a couple of AK's myself and prefer it over the AR-15 because of the simplicity of its design, but I would probably trade one of them for an AK-74 because of its flatter trajectory.) I know what the variables are. I just can't understand why such gifted game designers don't use the actual measurements used in the firearms industry, like MOA, FPS, foot-pounds, etc. If your engine uses those figures, then you can plug and play any firearm in the future. The absolutely WORST thing a designer can do to a tactical shooter is enforce artificial balancing when the real world provides all of the balancing you need, especially in the case of a single-player game, where no A.I. is going to be complaining that the realism is unfair to them. An SVD firing 7.62x54mm out of a 28 inch barrel has a muzzle velocity of 2580 - 2840 fps, while 7.62x51mm out of a 28 inch barrel has a muzzle velocity of 2632 - 2965 fps., both depending on the grain weight. So yes, comparable. And if you're going to use AP rounds for Russian ammo but not NATO, that seems a little biased, don't you think? TacShooter

These have been at least triple-checked :) Basic 7.62x51 (meaning not armor piercing "green tip") also known as 7.62x51 NATO is not comparable to 7.62.54R or 7.62x39 when it comes to NIJ-classification. This is the specific reason why NIJ III+ rating was designed since armor manufacturers needed to provide unofficial extra armor class that gives protection for those specific "AK-based" and certain AP rounds. You can google this if you search for NIJ III+ armor class, here's one pretty good example if scroll down to see those rating images between Level III and Level III+: https://premierbodyarmor.com/collections/level-iii-plates I can also confidently say that 7.62x39 is not a SMG-round since that's the main cartridge type in Finland for all army assault rifles. I have personally shot thousands of that specific ammo and I have never seen SMG that shoots that and the recoil from that ammo would not make sense for SMG either. When it comes to these rounds, it's sometimes confusing if you just look at the caliber, since there's many other variables that are related to armor penetration like round velocity, round geometry, round core type etc. But like mentioned earlier, I'm more than happy to make corrections if I have made a mistake :)

Please double-check this. 7.62x51 should be comparable to 7.62x54, while 7.62x39 has been called a "submachinegun round" by some, though we typically classify it as an assault rifle round. It doesn't seem right that an assault rifle round should be in the same class with a battle rifle round.

TacShooter

Tripping a mine should rip you apart. Armor not really helpful in that situation.

Great job Antti! this is EXACTLY what we have been looking for. A system with a square root function-like learning curve, easy to larn, but much to know and learn behind the simplicity. But two questions I got for you would be: 1. Will there be an patreon dev build for this ammo system? and if so, when will we get to play it? :) 2. Have you already fully implemented the different ammo types and the medical condition "headshot", that you would consider it game-ready? and if so, in which way did you implement the ammo system for now? What I mean by that is, do you already have the different calibers as different items ingame, and does the player need to have the right ammo type for each gun? Or is it - for the sake of simplicity - still just the placeholder ammo, but the ballistic system is based on the gun itself, so the game knows which penetration value is asked for, depending on the gun the bullet is shot from?

This armor system is perfect. You’ve been putting in very hard work Antti! Along with many others I am very excited to use the new system

Thank you, that sounds great!

Wehen is it awailable to test you think antti? Rogress is amazi g

I always love the thought of having the chance to apply ammunition knowledge to the gameplay, and I assume it also works both ways, as in rather picking an MP7 than an MP5 against enemies typically running some armor.

It can take more of those lower level rounds, there's certain multiplier reduction calculated for that but it was a bit messy to highlight in this image. Currently the Level 5 armor (IV) can for example take around 7-8 Level 1 (II) rounds. This topic is one of those that can't be fully realistic since otherwise those Level 5 plates would not get destroyed ever in most of the game maps and you would basically have unlimited armor condition :)

Road to Vostok

What happens if a lower level bullet hits higher level armor? For example does a level 1 bullet and a level 2 bullet reduce the condition of a level 2 armor by the same amount?
