Wahee!!! My submission for catmask's dtiys!! I think I learned a lot while doing it!!
I have never participated in a dtiys before so I know a lot of people put the original in the same post but that feels. like reposting to me which is drilled into me is a wrong thing so instead here's the link to the original > https://www.tumblr.com/catmask/796981153236140032/happy-autumn-my-minnows-asked-me-to-host-a-dtiys?source=share
Some thoughts since I was using this in large part as a study/practice piece:
It turned out a little bit experimental in some ways. I definitely took inspiration from the original by catmask, particularly regarding going with one of my simpler more cartoony styles to match the vibe, and the little yellow outline around parts to separate elements!
The outline look is something I do in some (not all) pieces I make, but I tried to leave it off of this one and it just didn't look right without it tbh so I'm not taking credit for that decision since it was in the original first o7
More in the experimental route, I tried some different shading methods this time, I tried to make the parts behind the character a little brighter because I love how it looks when other artists do that, and I like how it looks but I think I could have pushed it a bit more.
And my final note is that I think that I'm getting a LOT better at picking colors by eye than I used to be! not a single color was picked from the original image but I think I did a really good job of it still looking accurate to the character and matching the vibrancy and balance of the original which was the main thing I was studying!! 83c
