Paranoid Protestants | Seventh-day Adventists

The Seventh-day Adventists are either the tamest cult or the weirdest church in American Protestantism. Where is the line?

---

This was 10 months in the making, partially because of how ungodly long it is and partially because I had a lot of major life events occur back-to-back. Over the course of making this video, I got married, bought a house, both Atlas and Peabody died from cancer 2 weeks apart, and had surgery to fix a herniated disc. Now that this video is complete, I'll be moving. It's been quite the year, let me tell you.

The church hired a Catholic Lawyer by the name of Vincent L. Ramik to provide the church with a legal opinion of EGW's work, he says himself 'Based upon our review of the facts and legal precedents ... Ellen White was not a plagiarist, and her works did not constitute copyright infringement (or) piracy,' In regards to the health principles that were taught, Graham taught 100+ principles with 42.5% accuracy, Alcott with 150+ and 35% accuracy, Coles 70+ with 39.7% accuracy, Jackson with 100+ with 42% accuracy, Kellogg with 100+ at 45% accuracy. But for EGW McMahon found 46 health principles on her earliest work in 1864 Spiritual Works, 44 was verified @ 96%.

Darren Siu

The legalism that exists can probably be attributed to their rejection of the 1888 message on justification by faith that Jones and Waggoner was preaching. EGW was also endorsing them, and because of this, the leaders and congregation of the SDA at the time split them up and sent them to different countries. They held on to Uriah Smith's view of the dispensations and thus rejected a beautiful message that would have increased our understanding on the Investigative Judgment. Because of the loss to move forward, this core doctrine is still viewed as condemnation sourced from God rather than from the individual. The result is a confusion between salvation by grace AND works because of not understanding God's judgment/actions to be understood as a permission to self-destruct by letting one go their own way.

Darren Siu

please spend less money on VO artists 😭

yaoi boi

Awesome video! I appreciate the quality of your videos so much. I still do a rewatch of your whole channel every couple of months because its just that good! Keep spending all the time you need for each masterpeice you make ^^

Rokii

Amazing work as always.

MD

The hbomberguy cameo is pretty epic, particularly given how many times it was foreshadowed.

Rusty Shackleford

Hey when the video goes public

Perry Williams

Thank you. I thought this was great.

Peter

Wayyy too much voice acting. It waters down the experience for me. I come to hear you, not some random people that are too close to the mic.

Dylan Walchli

The 49% figure of Americans who believe recent natural disasters indicator we are in the end times was from 2014. It was repeated in 2023 and the figure was 35%

Philip O'Carroll

The SDA in Oklahoma never seemed real inclined to talk about the finer points of their beliefs. Outside of that, they seemed kind and approachable like most Christians.

Shane Hood

In my experience, south west sda might as well be a seperate denomination of SDA. I've seen men barred from SDA churches for having their hair too long, women barred from entering churches for having jewelry or piercings. Pastors preach that theaters and Hollywood are the propaganda of the devil, all using white's writings as justification. She said men hav to be manly, and not to buy jewelry, and theaters are where devil's breed. And that is the american stuff. In the churches I've been to in Asia, they argue about stuff as petty as whether the bible can be on an electronic tablet if it's in the church, and if women should be allowed on stage during sermons, or if they have to wait til the pastor is off stage to enter and play the piano.

Joel Gimbel

I know its not as safe a topic but you should make one of these videos about the nation of islam

Chris Dunbar

i would also like to add that this video is the first ive heard of Whites plagiarism, quite a shock but still believable from someone who joined the church at 7

Devin Wilcox

as a member of the SDA church please know that the church is internally is very much divided on the writings of EG White, for ones converted and not born into the SDA church you see a major decline in the taken legitimacy of her writing. To put it shortly there are ones who beileve every out there self-righteous view the church has ever had (ie, SDA is the one true church or acting is a sin because your impersonating someone else and that is a "lie" (he was a bible worker who was asked to leave my church after that sermon and i personally didn't come back for over a year.)) all the way to the ones who only look to the bible and encourage your to grab yours and follow along to literally fact check as he is preaching. from the poeple ive meet in church events like pathfinder camperees and so on the general population of the SDA church (at least in the southwest confrence) hold reading the bible and taking in the full context as the only way to know truth. even in SDA schools (i went to OAA) White is not brought up on why we believe any of our beliefs. However we do still regrettably study her writings and teach that she was a prophetess with the "gift of prophecy"

Devin Wilcox

I appreciate your sense of humor.

Doug Webster

Loved the hbomberguy appearance!

Catherine Inglis

Sorry for your loss and illness 🙁 but also congratulations on your marriage.

Catherine Inglis

Wow! That was worth waiting for.

Kevin Carney

Ngl, when first watching this, I paused the video at the beginning to see if 9/11 was on a Tuesday this year. That raised an eyebrow for me.

RogueDragoness

The Hbomb-esque wallpaper was *chef's kiss*

RogueDragoness

I can sympathize with the back problems, I've had them this year as well. Don't have to get surgery fortunately, but have had to deal with the rest. Thanks for all you do.

Waymond

RIP Atlas and Peabody, you were glorious fur tubes.

Jacob Alexander Tice

Hey KB, I'm sorry to hear about Atlas and Peabody. I hope you're doing as well as you can with their loss. I always remember their segments and designated videos with fondness, and I'm sure they were fond of you too. Tonal change, but congrats on the marriage and also finishing this behemoth of a video (congrats to the KB team too!)! I'm so excited to learn about this subject :D

Kate Minney

OMG! I will not watch it in one go - but I look forward seeing it all! I'm confident it will be great! Thank you!

EpicSeaDragon

Whoa, what a twist at the 1:35:00 mark

Ezalea Graves

Congratulations on the wedding brother! I grew up with SDA and this is somehow still way more interesting than I thought it would be

Albert LaFleur

Now if I don't get a director's cut version in 2034, I'll be disappointed. Promises have been made, KB!

bewitchedfencer

As a Seventh-day Adventist, I've been nervously waiting for this video for a long time. Thank you for all your hard work. You asked for feedback on why the 28th (#11) Fundamental belief was added. Here's a link: https://digitalcommons.andrews.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1386&context=jams#:~:text=The%20Global%20Mission%20Issues%20Committee,victory%20over%20sin%20and%20evil. TLDR: Adventist missionaries were dealing with demonic forces being witnessed by those they were ministering to. These people wanted assurance that by accepting Jesus, He would prove more powerful than the local spirit controlling their lives and villages. Holy Spirit > Local Spirit

RayRax

I’ve been watching your YouTube videos for a while now and this is my first ever Patreon subscription, but getting the SDA video early is worth it. Some of us do care about the lore! 😂 Thank you for putting in the effort to make great content

Ryan Reynolds

Congrats on the many important life events!

Kurt Kreuger

Possibly at some point, but no plans yet.

Knowing Better

Hey KB I’m wondering if you plan on doing videos on eastern religions and their crazy offshoots too?

Austin Tweedy-Lawrence

Really good stuff, can't wait to watch! Congrats on the marriage and house, and so sorry to hear about Atlas and Peabody. <3 Not to nitpick, and you certainly don't owe us all the details, but is there a reason you include some costs of making the video and not others? Just making up napkin-math numbers here: assuming you pay your staff and yourself an average of $24/hr, or around $48k/yr, that's $4k/mo x5 people x10 months = $200k actual cost to produce the video. That's a lot! And that's just my made-up numbers for salary, not even getting into health insurance and taxes and all the other costs of running a small business. I think it's a good thing for people to appreciate what it really takes to create high quality but otherwise-free Youtube content like KB. And why Patreon support is so important.

Orevelos

Thank you for making this video! I had been looking forward to it for months and became a Patron to watch it ASAP. As an exSDA, I gotta say that the point you made about people thinking the churches they grew up in are unique struck a nerve 😂 I think the SDA church is especially harmful to children, in part because it encourages social isolation and fear about the end of the world both of which can prevent someone from living a healthy adult life. That’s an aspect of these types of religions that I rarely see people talk about outside of ex-member communities. To your point, maybe that’s not so unique of SDA after all and maybe my experience as a child was not the typical SDA experience. Thanks again!

Emmanuel

Dropping this on the Sabbath, was so special to me.

Leilah Ruan

The voice actors are really worth it. They are.a fanstic touch

Taylor Rae

Great work! It's certainly a lot to absorb (I may have to go back and rewatch some parts), but always an aces job. Look forward to next video!

Mark M

Excellent work. Depressing. A lot to absorb here. Thank you! I wish there was some way to get this video and your others into the mainstream media.

Michael Lambert

I just wanted to say that I really appreciate your integrity in not posting Speampunk KB's video, despite your verbal agreement. It's his work, and he really should make a channel of his own to post it to. I'm sure in the long run he'll appreciate the shoutout more than you posting something ghostwritten by him

Ezalea Graves

Happy Sabbath! Let us gather as a congregation to be blessed by his outstretched hand!

Ray S

This was well worth the wait. so sorry to hear about Atlas and Peabody.

Thomas Barnes

9/11 video tease at the end???

Edgxr

i joined your patreon to watch this video. hope this helps cover that huge cost

Dylan Oonk

So sorry about Atlas and Peabody. But congrats on marriage and house buying! Simply stated - I watch more YT than any other platform and you are, by far, my favorite creator out of probably 1000 subscriptions. And like a fine wine, your videos were already good and they just get better with age and as you do more of them. You are the definition of quality over quantity, and that is why I am always willing to wait for your videos to come it - as always, this is a home run!

Gregory Reichart

Glad you found spectrum.org for some balance. Turns out not all SDA's are identical. A great disappointment to our current Pope, Ted Wilson of the General Conference of SDA.

FredShoey

The Lord giveth! 🙏 It's hard to express how much your efforts in making this video are appreciated. Can't wait to watch!

Amy Boles

Seeing the "Teaser" on Youtube got me to finally become a patreon too. I've been watching your videos since 2018 and I am always astonished how much work goes into them. Thank you for the work you do :)

Simon Fischer

So excited to watch this at last! Congrats on your marriage and house purchase. Condolences on the loss of your fur babies; that's always so difficult to experience.

Judy Sonnenberg

Just went ahead and fixed that. Please let me know if there are any other errors, that way I can fix them before wider release.

Knowing Better

Thanks for catching that. Apparently my Clockify app categorized some things as "non-billable" and didn't put them in the final report. They should be in there now!

Knowing Better

Congrats on the marriage and being done with this behemoth! Really sorry about your losses. I am unbelievably excited for this video, as I find your voice and commentary super relaxing, which means that after I’ve watched them full once, I use them as podcasts to go to sleep. Is it an insult to say they help me sleep? Idk, but I’m glad to have another in the rotation. I’ve watched the JHK vid enough times to know the first 15 minutes of lines by heart.

At 27:31 “Association is misspelled as “Assocation”

Frank Norton

Out of curiosity, the values only add up to about 719 hours. How come?

RTT12

Same reaction, here.

paercebal

>I got married, bought a house, 🥳🥳🥳 >both Atlas and Peabody died from cancer 2 weeks apart 😞😞😞

Kend0

Oh, no! So sorry to hear about your fur babies passing. 😢 Hope you’re doing okay.

Trevin Beattie

Wow!

Dragi Raos

Congrats on all the good stuff including getting this done! I gotta find the right time to watch the whole damn thing...

Cyrus Krapf-Altomare

Congratulations on tying the knot, KB! So sorry to hear about Atlas and Peabody.

Chris Hill

Cool! Can’t wait to watch your magnum opus this weekend! 😂
