Four Times a Day | John Harvey Kellogg

John Harvey Kellogg is singularly responsible for so much of what we think we know about diet and health. However, like many 1800s doctors, he had some rather 1800s ideas.

I had a friend back in the 80s whose mom was very much a new age, crystal-loving, tarot-reading type. She taught her son to believe that you should be having at least 3 bowel movements a day or you "weren't healthy." Now I know where she got that idea!

I’m a boomer and my mom was a late baby in a large family. Basically, my grandmother was a Victorian. And she had ideas about food and life that were very clearly heavily influenced by Dr Kellogg. When we visited her there was no candy allowed at all. Meals were very healthy, and lean. Almost no spice. You can probably imagine. The only treat we were allowed - and she considered this a huge deal, where she was essentially spoiling us grandkids - was a milk pudding called Junkett. It’s similar to yogurt so it fits in the theme. She enjoyed a breakfast of Graham crackers and milk every morning. And considered one cup of tea with lemon and honey a healthy afternoon snack. What I wouldn’t give for one more quiet afternoon with her so I could learn more about her idea of what constitutes a healthy diet!
