Palestine, backer version
Added 2024-02-16 01:31:54 +0000 UTC
Hello!
Sorry this video took so long. I was making a different one and had to interrupt it to write about the situation in Gaza, as I couldn't think about anything else
This is a very early version visually, most of the images aren't in yet so some parts (long quotes etc) may be hard to follow. Patreon thanks/thumbnail/video description to come
I'm going to try to take a break from big sad projects and focus on shorter fun ones for a while. I'd like to get more videos finished (and have them not be so miserable to make)
Thank you so much for all your support
Shaun
It says the video is private now. Was it different from the public version?

Thank you for once again capturing the situation and the the depressing state inside and outside of my brain so well. I feel the same and your poignant conclusions really help me limp on and try to make an impact <3

I'm just 4 minutes into the video and something struck me. I realise this is your usual background image, with your signature skull sitting in front of the screen. But on the subject of death and destruction, something feels off, sort of like in bad taste, macabre, to have a grinning skull sitting there the whole time. Maybe I'm over-sensitive, but perhaps you want to consider that.

As someone who used to be more pro Israel and these days increasingly leans pro-Palestine and anti-Zionism, I wish that you hadn't truncated the history of the conflict in the way you did. It almost feels biased, unfortunately. The history of the Holocaust aliyahs, the various Pogrom aliyahs, the Arab-Israeli War and Jordan's annexation of the West Bank, the Six Day War, Yom Kippur, the various Intifadas and other incidents, and the wider middle eastern context surrounding "Israel's right to exist" are important milestones of the conflict and I think big reasons why many on the pro Israel side are prone to a sort of siege mentality that then justifies the human rights atrocities that we're now seeing. Never mind the whole religious/Jerusalem side of things.
I would have loved to see your take in these issues and see you address the usual pro-Israel arguments that are thrown about and debunk them, like you did with your Hiroshima video, which I thought was great. Your Hiroshima video is what got me hooked on your channel! :)
Of course, none of this history changes the fact that yes, we need a BDS movement to stop Israel from comitting further genocide, and yes, Israel is unambiguously a colonial project and colonialism is bad. Not trying to defend Israel, merely feeling that there was an extra dimension to this whole situation that I would have loved to see you explore.

the much less heartfelt comment: the fucking terror shift accusation is so ridiculous it makes me laugh hysterically i dont understand how people believe that. that and those videos on twitter where idf soldiers were throwing around suspiciously light looking boxes labeled "medical supplies". in english.

I follow you on twitter and I've been anticipating this video, you did a really good job with it, I thought it was nicely structured and easy to follow, you get your point across very well.
i'm glad you want to do some more fun, shorter projects, i can't imagine the constant dealing with these immensely soul crushing topics and putting them into these long insightful videos is good for anyone long term. i'm excited to see what you make!

he literally has a point about the antisemitism. and takes pains to point out that israel is not synonymous with jewish people. you should watch it instead of doom spiralling.

"This seems like something that happened in history" YES, I feel like I am being dragged back to the 1970s-1980s. When as I child I was FORCED to root for one side.

It doesn’t, unless you’re pro-Israel and define opposition to Israel as inherently anti-Semitic.

I can't bring myself to watch this now. During these past four months, I have seen too many people on the left, people who I had admired, prove that they can't criticize Israel's actions without going further until they arrive at blatant and open racist anti-semitism. I can't deal with finding out if Shaun is in that same category right now, so I am just going to have to take a pass on this one for now.

Know that you were unsure of how this video would turn out but having now watched it i think you've done an amazing job. The video is paced really well - didn't feel it's length while watching it - and there were a number of moments that got to me emotionally. Hopefully the positive response you've gotten from us patrons is enough to make you feel that all the days, weeks and months spent w/ this video in your head were worth all that stress and sadness. Will be donating to Heal Palestine once your vid w/ the links is up. Thanks for all you do Shaun (even if at times it might not feel like enough)

Not that I have something insightful to add, but it feels odd to pass a video like this without reaching out - for whatever it's worth, you have managed to perfectly capture and verbalize a feeling of hopelessness I thought much too large and complex and muddled to be put into words, AND you managed to do it without giving in to it. Thank you, and take care of yourself.

Thank you, what you say makes sense and I have been feeling many of those effects, I just feel so much guilt, as if I’m not someone who would walk away from omelas. Perhaps it’s due to the fact no one in my town seemingly cares at all about what’s happening, not friends, not family, and I haven’t seen any events about protesting, and it makes me feel useless. My roommate won’t even boycott places. I have to be stronger and not let this consume me, I’m sorry, and thank you

Your point towards the end about finding community with people who emphasize, regardless of nationality gender or religion, and feeling a strong disconnect with the world we otherwise live in, has struck a chord with me. I feel that the same sentiment applies to COVID, the continuous denial of which endangers us all and is rooted in eugenic ideas: my community is immunocompromised people fighting for clean air and a social safety net, not the government of my country forcing people back into offices and schools. It applies to climate change, the continuous denial of which endangers us all: my community is people who fight against it, not my government. Thank you for articulating this idea.

Thank you for your work. It's been extremely depressing to see mainstream media coverage of this war (or lack thereof), I really hope this helps people understand what's really going on.
One minor thing, your pronounciation of the name Françoise is a tiny bit off, the "-se" at the end should be vocalized (FrançoiZ) or it sounds like the masculine version (François) where the s is silent, I was confused for a bit and thought Art Spiegelman was married to a man

Hello, I’m not quite sure how to phrase it, but it is actually good to not focus all your energy on Palestine and let your emotions be controlled by it 24/7. If you live in a constant state of sadness and depression, you are going to get burnt out, and will be useless when it comes to raising awareness and other forms of activism.
Its okay to allow yourself a break. To rest, to recover, to realize there are still beautiful things in the world. And when you are rested, you can continue educating, protesting, teaching, or whatever it is that you are able to do. Doomscrolling is not doing anyone a favor. Take care of yourself.

Good call on focusing on more fun videos next! It also helps me as a viewer. I noticed that the constant barrage of bad news really tanks my mood, even though engaging with those topics is very important. So a mix of facing the worst the world has to offer and more positive or silly topics is definitely important to keep us all going

Certainly glad to see a Shaun post but I do hope you are well, thanks for all you do, your videos have helped me grow so much
Edit: I made this comment prior to watching the video in order to express my appreciation and admiration for Shaun’s content, now I have watched the whole video and I have to say that I am crying. I have spent many nights these past months crying sleeplessly because I cannot take my eyes off the Twitter feed of horror and share it in my own small effort to get this to a wider audience. It is so hard to be constantly anxious and sad and angry about this and I often find myself waking up from having been relaxed and even happy about other things in my life, having forgotten what is happening, and this makes me all the more disgusted with the way that I live my life. I wish I could do more, give more, and I thank you so much for this video. I would say more but I don’t know if anybody cares, I hope everyone can get some rest when they need it, I cannot anymore

Yeah you're no good to the world or yourself if you 've depressed yourself out of being able to function my friend. Thank you for sharing this with us but do try to do something palate cleansing I guarantee we won't all leave. I can't wait to watch this tonight. As sad as I know it will make me feel. The world is shutting a lot of us down. It's so rough right now and we can't like not feel empathy, but we also can't drown in it and it's scary and it's hard to know where to find the balance. But we're trying and I want you to succeed because I care about you as a person
