The Vampire Diaries 1x12 "Unpleasantville" Full Reaction

There’s many things to process with this episode but the Gilbert family drama is my favorite. “Hey Elena. Your little brother’s teacher was actually married to your biological mother. So now he’s your step father AND he’s dating your aunt. And not to surprise you too bad but you and your unknown stepfather are grieving the loss of your mother … who was — by the way — feasted on by your vampire boyfriend’s older brother.” I’d be charging the Salvatore’s my therapy bill at this point. Love watching your reactions!

I can’t help but feel this is a hostile comment to something that isn’t really that deep, especially if you’ve been watching my reactions in the past, as in there is an ultimatum you’re holding over my head. Helena, Regina Mills, Spike. They all have something in common. I didn’t like them at the start and thought they were not to be taken in a lighter note but their stories played out. They have a reasoning to who they are and they grew on me. They went from me seeing them as the one to watch out for in a concerned way to some of them being my favourite characters. I have made a mention numerous times that Damon has done some good things. The trip to Georgia was even highlighted and I couldn’t even blame Elena for finding comfort. Like I said, whilst drastic, he saved Elena. I have come a long way in understanding Damon’s character since Episode 1. I am not going to do a 180 overnight and I am seeing some growth in his character, at the same time I am understanding that Stefan has flaws even with the lying and not getting over Katherine. Even my favourite character of all time has a rule associated to them about lying, I will mostly look into the layers to said lies. Doesn’t mean I am going to be right. Some people are liars for the sake of lying. Some people have their layers like Damon’s reasoning to being a dick to Stefan. He has to go through that agony. There may come a point where there will be a 180 in terms of me liking Damon more because Stefan has done something tasteless. Who knows. The main thing is, characters and shows are a journey. I’m aware that this is not going to be so similar as a good/bad brother thing for 8 seasons, I am not even doing that for my stories I am creating which has that kind of vibe Heck, I am even knowing that is not the route we’re going towards as we hit midseason because the universe is growing. Did I feel we were going that way based on the first few episodes, sure. But I have been wrong many a time about the direction of the story based on either twists or growth etc. Not only that but I’ve watched Orphan Black. Two siblings that looked night and day in terms of who to side with more. Now whilst they’re obviously written differently, the point is that it wasn’t the status quo for 5 seasons. In the end, I understand Damon has his flaws but also strengths. I understand Stefan has his strengths but also flaws and I understand this is a journey that will surely see me change views as we go along. That’s the beauty of storytelling

Love that you brought up ghost face cuz The Vampire Diaries was created by the writer of Scream as well, so there’s a lot of artistic crossover!

Good lord Stefan!! "if history is any indication, there is only one lair among us"...yes Stefan you, we haven’t seen Damon lying, not even once, Stefan, many times. After the vampire attacked Elena in her home, Damon suggested to get him that night, Elena immediately agreed with him and Stefan didn't like that one bit. He didn't like that Damon and Elena bonded, in the road trip and he didn't like that Elena sided with Damon. So what he does? Quoting Stefan " no, nothing hidden about it, no lie , no deception,.... I'll help you....". Instead he lies and deceit his brother and got Elena involved into Damon's deception, so that he would get Elena teaming up with him to the expanses of Damon's trust. By clever manipulation, playing on her fear for the safety of the family she has left, he dragged Elena into his lying, and she is anything but a liar, forcing her to plot against Damon to destroy the bond they created. The master manipulator at work. Sorry Liam no, please don't do that. You don’t know that Katherine is a danger, there is nothing that indicate that so far, at all, so you are just finding excuses for Stefan behaviour and there is no excuse. The show is telling you something and you are already deviating from what the show is telling you very clearly, that the narrative bad/good brother is a starting point to get to a totally different point. The writers are showing you all the lies that Stefan is saying for a reason that shouldn’t be ignore or worse twisted in something that isn’t there. This show is extremely complex, and incredibly psychological, but is not bombastically obvious about it, it’s very settle, will give you little hints that will amount one by one, drop by drop to a giant ocean that cannot be ignored. The first season is the making or breaking of a reactor in terms of how much the reactor is capable to follow what the writers are telling you, the capacity to read body language that is extremely important in this show, how well you can read people and not to fall into the trap of what is called “Confirmation bias” that is the tendency to process information by looking for, or misinterpreting information to find consistency with their existing beliefs. This biased approach results in a person ignoring information that is inconsistent with their beliefs. You should to keep an open mind and follow what the show it taking you, because if you don’t follow, you are going to find yourself so far from where the show is, that you are going to misjudge motivations, evidences, character intentions, everything to match your bias preconception. If the show is showing you that Stefan is a lair, it is because he is a lair, don’t find justification for his lying that aren’t there to kep him good and to keep Damon bad, just because you already formed a preconceived opinion about the brothers that isn’t what the show is about. The initial narrative god/bad brother isn’t there for you to stick to it for 8 seasons, it’s already very clear that is taking a different direction, diverged significantly since few episode ago and you haven’t picked it up. The road is turning and you keep going straight, if you don’t follow what the show is telling you, you will find yourself so far removed from what the show is going, that you will have to find more and more inexistent justification to match with your preconceived hasty judgement about the brothers. So keep an open mind, if you can, and be ready to be proven wrong, because that is what the show is doing giving you a narrative and exploring the opposite of that narrative, challenging you of how you are prepared to have you believes shaken, how mature you are in admitting to yourself to be proven wrong, to be surprised, to learn to be less judgemental and more inclined to be understanding. Follow the direction the show is taking you. I am telling you this for you, if you want to get the TVD community following you. Your choice.
