The thing with the Lorelai/Max ship (or really any of her relationships) and what Lorelai doesn't understand about herself is...at her core, she's a polyamorous person.
The fact she's perpetually in love with more than one person simultaneously is irrefutable evidence of that.
Some polyamorous people are capable of monogamy, it's just not what we're best suited for so we tend to find it a lot more challenging than monogamous people do.
I think the reason Luke and Lorelai seem to work better than Lorelai and Max is because Max seems like he's looking for someone who only has eyes for him, while Luke seems okay with her having feelings for other people and it has never deterred him. (We see it in the scene when he basically tells Max, it's fine if you're around, just know that I'm around too)
Ideally, Lorelai would have a primary partner who respects her identity and her needs, and doesn't require exclusivity from their partner in order to be happy. Even better if that person also happens to be poly.
Finding that during the era this show takes place in would have been nearly impossible. Luke is, in my opinion, the next best thing.
For me, I will always ship her as living polyamorously.
I like to envision a world where Luke is her primary partner, Max lives in Hartford and she goes there after Friday night dinners and stays over, Christopher is around whenever he spontaneously appears (as is Rachel for Luke), and there is one more person I like for her who hasn't been introduced yet (βποΈ π£ππ4οΈβ£ποΈ) and they just date casually. π€·π»
Is this unconventional? Yes. Will we ever see it in canon? Probably not. Am I currently writing a fanfic containing these relationships? Yep, you betcha. Because living vicariously through fanfic is how I get by as a polyamorous person in a monogamous relationship π a system which has worked pretty well for the past twenty years.

I'm so torn between "adorable grand gesture" and "giant red flag." I love Max, though!
