FredBoat 2017 year in review

Hey all,

2017 has come and gone (give or take a few hours) and I wanted to take some time to reflect on what the year meant for FredBoat.

FredBoat was initially created by just me back in spring 2016, and exactly one year ago we saw about 468k users in 20.8k servers. Those are very big numbers, but it is quite small in comparison with today's numbers. Today we see over 10 million (!) users in just shy of 594k discord servers.

By no means is this a one-man feat. In early 2017 I teamed up with two volunteers, Napster and Shredder, who have consistently contributed new features to FredBoat. In addition to that, we have accepted code contributions from 20 other volunteers.

December 2016 was my second month of actually receiving donations on Patreon. Back then I had 23 paying patrons helping me keep FredBoat afloat with their financial support. This December that number rose to 392 (!), with a record high 80 new paying patrons. Welcome new people!

A surprising amount of FredBoat users live in Asia and South America. In early 2017 I developed a language system. Currently, FredBoat speaks 35 different languages thanks to our 424 contributors on Crowdin, and more are still being added and improved.

Thank you everyone who have contributed to FredBoat in one way or another. Most patrons are pledging $2, but that $2 a month adds up to a lot. Thanks to you patrons I have been able to pay for FredBoat's server fees without having to reach into my own pockets every month. With your support I hope to work on FredBoat for years to come.
