Summary: A scientist, Professor Jakob ten Brinken, interested in the laws of heredity, impregnates a prostitute in a laboratory with the semen of a hanged murderer. The prostitute conceives a female child who has no concept of love, whom the professor adopts. The girl, Alraune, suffers from obsessive sexuality and perverse relationships throughout her life. You mentioned this one in the 52 weeks review: Under the Skin. Both the book and movie are great but vary WILDLY in tone and narration, which sets them nearly against each other while telling the same story.

I'd just like to add that controversial author Hanns Heinz Ewers is often credited with the literary invention of the splatter genre through short stories like 'Die Tomatensauce' (Tomato Sauce).
