However, obviously there were some bureaucratic issues with getting things flowing again when you furloughed a bunch of employees and are making such a mess which is why there was a delay in funding flow to that particular program at first after they walked this back.

I started in 2006 and everything Will Tavlin was saying is a perfect encapsulation on my career since then. I always imagined that more streamers would mean more demand for content😂 Seemingly each project save for feature films of a decent scale or stuff by ‘auteurs’(like Adam McKay) has a tighter schedule and budget is invariably shot by some guy who is maybe 28. I just came from lunch with work friends and we were talking about a possible M Knight movie shooting here in June with a 20 million dollar budget wtf

Defense is 13% and that is substantially lower than decades past. Social security and healthcare costs are becoming bigger and bigger sources of the pie. More people than ever are on Medicaid in part thanks to the expanded subsidies that may be cut in a few months. Our welfare system isn’t where it needs to be. That’s for certain. I still don’t know how one gets the idea that it’s only being cut over time.

Jax Media created this genre by turning Broad City into a Comedy Central show from its original form of web series. Again, the streamers are the end of the road in the disaster that is today’s entertainment industry, but I wish we paid more attention to the middle men who created the infrastructure of the disaster. I know this is yet another scream into the void, but can’t help it.

Look at what makes money today and tell me that it’s challenging, artistic filmmaking. I agree that most Netflix branded movies are bad but there is such ambiguity over what the Netflix branding even means. Sometimes it’s actually produced in house by Netflix, in a lot of cases it’s produced separately and acquired by Netflix for distribution. (This is especially knotty re: foreign markets. For example Better Call Saul is a “Netflix original” in other countries.) Some Netflix branded movies I’ve seen recently that I wholeheartedly recommend include Rebel Ridge (the new Saulnier movie), the Stranger (Australian crime film), and the raid-esque Indonesian martial arts/gore film The Night Comes For Us.
