MM36 - Cops & Robbers feat. Robert Franco

Today Will, Hesse, and special guest Rob Franco delve deep into two hidden gem Hesse picks: Electra Glide In Blue (1973) and Point Blank (1967)!

Have you ever asked yourself, “what if the band Chicago made a motorcycle cop exploitation movie? What would that look like?”

And have you ever asked yourself, “what would it look like if Lee Marvin recruited a young John Boorman and gave him Carte Blanche to make the most insane American crime movie ever made?”

This is not my beautiful bike!

This is not my beautiful $93,000!

My God! What have I done!!!?!

One of the best eps of Movie Mindset. Point Blank was ABSOLUTELY an influence on The Master, but it was also an influence in Inherent Vice. I read in a press release that Josh Brolin's character's look was lifted directly from Lee Marvin in Point Blank.

The Real Spiro Agnew

Anybody identify the scenes in the master that were lifted? I just watched it, but I'm having trouble figuring out what Hesse was talking about.

Jake

The script isn't very good but it's shot and acted in this dreamy '60s way that's pretty cool. Plus it's only 92 minutes long.

Tim O'

I rented Point Blank on YouTube today. Lee Marvin punches a dude in the dick at about 31:50. This movie rocks.

Tim O'

Is there an editing mistake at 1:01:20? Audio cuts out.

Christopher Scragg

Haven't listened to it yet, but I still want to thank you. For years I had search for the meaning of the line "Backseat on electric glide" in Texas Never Whispers. I hope this a break in the case.

Nacho

I saw Point Blank last night. The cinematography and color is incredible. The acting and story were not as strong. Definitely worth seeing though.

Miles_B

Hate to be that guy, but Point Blank is just okay, the book it's based on (The Hunter) is much better.

Yarblockos

that guy said how many words over that 300 minute episode? maybe 12?

etienne

I love how this isn't the first time Hesse got so excited about a movie that she forgot to introduce the guest

Mary Mallone

also on YouTube

danny

Hesse, THANK YOU! For Electra Glide in Blue it was awesome. I really read it as a satire and thought it was great

Another TUBI

Erik Weissengruber

Comparing the director’s commentary to a homeless person’s stream of consciousness was so spot on. Listening to that guy talk reminded me of an alcoholic I dated. There’d be a bunch of words strung together without meaning that left me wondering if his brain cells died or never existed.

Normica

Electra Glide in Blue is on TUBI, possibly on Hebee and Tnorknork

MCL

Do Seven Beauties

Luke

First four are free on audible BTW

Aaron

Thanks to Rob for mentioning the Richard Stark Parker book series. Just got through the first two already. Good stuff.

Aaron

His wikipedia article says that he played a Native American in at least 23 movies, though

T

Movie mindset bingo squares: “dreamlike quality”, “skeleton key that unlocks the film”, “Hesse says ‘Fa**ot’, what else…

Tyler Hanel

Hesse apologizing for a long first feature review like we wouldn't enjoy 3-4 hour episodes.

ERIC

hearing the walker returning from the dead sequence described in its every detail made me so happy. Loved how Lee Marvin's biographical details were used to support the film's new wave noir supernatural fantastique statement. The film is both so serious and so funny and the behind the scenes stories make it seem like this film was itself the product of mysterious unstoppable spirits

Leon

Hesse’s laugh at around 1:28:30 around the Boorman book, priceless!!!

Courtney

That's basically what my experience is college was

Tim O'

so much John Boorman talk and no mention of Zardoz smh

Zane Merritt

also james b sikking was a major character in parts!

JD

wow elctraglide in blue arizona masterpiece

Joe

Holy s***, I never thought I would hear another human being comment on Electraglide in Blue. I actually burst out it in a silly, excited gasp.

tysonw81

learned that term in Eastwood's El Camino

SHEEBCORE

if you can believe it this is my 2nd favorite Lee Marvin story relating to his Mifune worship: https://youtu.be/jzYIcJijIt4?si=1LP43A6S8WZQUOTR

Rohmer Simpson

Thought this said Cops and Robbersons. Was kinda excited, like Captain Ron excited.

Andrew

My college roommate was a cop like 15+ years ago and we would always play with his riot gear, breathalyzer each other, wear his uniform with no pants like a porky pig PD He’d also whack the absolute shit out of the side of our thighs with his baton, stun locking your leg lol. He wouldn’t use those taser dart things, but did use the base to shock us while we peed

Cullen S

There is most definitely some racism in "zip," and also some nauseating horror – it was short for "zipperhead," which is what US troops called dead Vietnamese civilians who'd been run over by tanks and crushed into the zipper-like pattern of the tank treads

Michael S. Judge

Another great Angie Dickinson appearance is in Jacques Deray's 'The Outside Man' with Scheider, Tritignant, and Ann Margeret. An epic LA Crime film I think should be cannonized. Joe Morton sings the damn theme song.

Michael Polacheck

Nice Hill Street Blues reference from Hesse. Love that show, have you binged it?

JD

James William Guercio also produced a PSA spot called "Shoes for Industry" on the Firesign Theatre album "Don't Crush That Dwarf, Hand Me The Pliers".

Michael Polacheck

With the Easy Rider reference I’m reminded that yall should do a Dennis Hopper direction double feature with Easy Rider and Out of the Blue

steven bassett

this trailer for Electra Glide in Blue rips so hard https://youtu.be/5niHVBPMep4?si=FV1BD1se0-o-r9G4

Re: the “Indian motorcycle cop” line confusion. He’s not Native American, Indian is an iconic motorcycle brand from the early 20th century

Sam

It’s very funny when Hesse makes fun of Europeans silly voices

Nolan

Charlie potatoes, Charlie fucking potatoes.

Suzie

Ahh yes Robert Franco the last uncancelled Franco brother

Sam Bondurant

Really missed a trick not calling this "Cops and Roberts"

Max

Hesse needs to be my chrome tranny. It’s all I want.

Jim McKenna

Clouddead sampled Electra Glide In Blue, I think

If you want watch a couple of hard drinking individuals go through some war stuff, watch Hell in the Pacific with Lee Marvin and Toshiro Mifune. Also directed by Boorman.

Zach H.

Actually a more coherent double feature

Here, Try This

I like to think Harve was the arresting officer in Miranda v Arizona
