Lock In by John Scalzi. I know you've hated his other work, and I read Old Man's War and thought it was terrible. The premise for this hooked me though - a pandemic causes millions of people to be "locked in" - totally mentally aware but unable to move. They create an online community and design robots for consciousness to occupy. The main character is locked in, and also a detective. It was really good.
