Led Zeppelin - Battle of Evermore

Since we reacted to Sandy Denny without knowing we wanted to bring you this Led Zeppelin tune that would likely get blocked on YouTube.

It was wonderful to revisit this together and share it with you.

All the best from,

 Nick Lex and Marley

Led Zeppelin - Battle of Evermore

Comments

Hi Guys. As the new member of your family I never realised you had done this until now. Once again a great reaction. I'm so happy that the Fotheringhay reaction and the discovery of Sandy led you back here for a more in depth listen to the track. I hope you are now encouraged tho seek out more of Sandy's work.

Colin

Thank you for your kind words and support! We appreciate you being here and for your insight! :) - Lex

I've recently joined you, finding your reactions style very refreshing and enlightening compared with some others. In regards to this song can I suggest you search for and react to Nancy and Anne Wilson's version of this song at some awards ceremony for LZ a few years back now. I'd post the link, but You'll find it. So interesting to see the sister's playing together!!! Enjoy!

I'm really late, had listened before, but didn't write immediately .. which I should do in the future again. There are 2 things I'd like to talk about: first, Nick, like you said, that songs like this one might be skipped ... well, back in the LP-times you didn't skip ... Even if you only liked the Hardrock of LZ you just accepted the 2 "soft" songs. And my 2nd message is for Alexia: Unfortunately you are born to late .. when I saw your "dance moves" with your arms in the air, I immediately thought of a phase in my life, beeing 20 - 22, hanging out every weekend, sometimes Friday, Saturday and Sunday at our Rock-Disco Musicalbox and when they played certain rock or prog songs, it was always the girls/young women entering the dancefloor and moving around like elfs ...(I remember you calling yourself an elf) , kind of floating over the dancefloor with their arms in the air. I have some examples and you maybe listen to them by yourself, because they are on spot nr 91 and 111 of my request list, so you had to wait several years, until the requests are placed :-) One is the band Gong, several times already mentioned by others, the song is Ard na greine, the other one Jon Lord (Deep Purple) on one of his solo CDs, completely different than Deep Purple, the song is Bouree with Arabian vibes ... maybe even good music for bellydance ........and another one was Jean Luc Ponty's Mirage ... and so many more. Me, as someone, who could do "normal" disco dancing and all the stuff I learned in the dancing school (Waltz, Samba,Tango, ChaChaCha) was standing next to the dancefloor making sure, my mouth doesn't stand open because of this special "spectacle" ... I was too shy to dance like that in public ... we did at private parties after 3-8 beers :-)

Always loved the mandolin in this song. You don’t hear it much in classic rock music, although Rod Stewart comes to mind. And thanks for blowing my mind that I never knew that was Sandy Denny. My vast knowledge of music just never went there I guess.

So glad you followed the Sandy Denny rabbit hole to this Led Zeppelin tune. Love it! - the mandolin and the way the vocals complement each other - so good, it never gets old. Led Zeppelin were more Blues-based Rock but they made it their own sound. Oh, and the Pink Floyd vocalist you’re referring to must be Clare Torry from The Great Gig in the Sky. Another monumental but sometimes unacknowledged talent. Loved having this reaction on Patreon. Thanks ✨🤪

Michele

When they played it live, Robert was on lead vocals of course, and JPJ was the second vocalist and on acoustic guitar with Jimmy on the mandolin.

If I remember correctly, Jimmy Page picked up John Paul Jones' mandolin for the first time and learned to play it just for this song, and along with Robert Plant did the whole song in one sitting!

Thanks for this. I too must have heard this countless times and the blending of voices gets me every time. The studio wizardry of the 60s and 70s is unmatched because it was such a huge industry at the time. I almost always go for the studio versions of just about every song and band before listening to the live versions to see how the songs were crafted as they were meant to be. Of course a lot of times live versions win out because of the immediacy that is involved...Led Zeppelin's Live at the BBC album is absolutely a must-listen if you've heard all of the studio albums. The songs on that 2 CD set are culled from 1969 and 1971 and really capture them well because they were recorded so well, especially given the years involved, but the BBC is renowned for their recording tecniques. Hopefully, you can find time in your busy schedules to give it a spin even if not as a reaction.

Wow!! That’s crazy - they were on the wrong stuff 😂

I think maybe my favorite song on the album! Brings back memories !! Just something about the atmospheric sound of it.

Every time I hear Zep, I am reminded that the "ultra-cool and hip" Rolling Stone Magazine trashed EVERY Led Zeppelin album. It's actually unbelievable to ponder that fact.
