Who says rock music isn't educational? I remember buying ELP's debut album in 1970, listening to it, devouring the album cover notes and then heading for my school's library the next day to look up on Greek mythology and find out about The Three Fates. You're so right Nick, we are so lucky to have Keith, Greg and Carl's recordings to listen to for the rest of our lives. 54 years so far and still counting...

Tank is just a fantastic song. Love it! As for the creativity of the time and the mind blowing array of brilliant music coming out in this period, I think it is a combination of the dawn of a new age of rock and drugs. I know that might be controversial but I think we can thank sheer well trained music talent and marijuana and LSD for this great period of music output. The creativity was through the roof.....peoples minds were being opened.

Glad to have it here on Patreon

For those not up on their Greek mythology, the Three Fates were sisters who wove the thread of each person's life. Clotho spun the thread and therefore controlled their birth, Lachesis drew out the thread and determined the length of life, and Atropos cut the thread and thereby set the manner of death. Now give it another listen with that in mind! As for the amazing sound from the Royal Festival Hall organ, I always had the sense you could hear it actually drawing breath like some immense musical beast...

I had the privilege to run some of the great Rock radio stations of the U.S. during my professional career, and one of them was Z-93 in Atlanta. We put on free concerts for our listeners entitled "Z-Ninety Free" at the Lakewood Amphitheater, and of course I couldn't help but have my prog proclivities influence the acts we chose! June 16, 1997 it was ELP, and here's the setlist (and Nick, Kansas co-headlined with ELP, so I figure you'd want to see THAT set list, too!): ELP Karn Evil 9: 1st Impression, Part 2 Tiger in a Spotlight Hoedown Touch and Go From the Beginning Knife-Edge Bitches Crystal Piano Solo Honky Tonk Train Blues (Meade Lux Lewis cover) Take a Pebble Lucky Man Tarkus (Tarkus Parts 1-4) Pictures at an Exhibition Encore: Fanfare for the Common Man Drum Solo KANSAS Point of Know Return Miracles Out of Nowhere Song for America Cheyenne Anthem The Wall Hold On Journey From Mariabronn Portrait (He Knew) Encore: Dust in the Wind Carry On Wayward Son

The Trilogy CD is tucked back behind the white guitar. :)

He is not improvising in The Three Fates. It's all composed.

I was SO HAPPY to see this was available on patreon although it sucks that you got blocked. Thanks so much, Nick, for continuing to bring ELP to people's attention. LOVE them.

ELP is one of my favorite bands. Love this marathon!

Really brought back memories! I had the ELP tape back in 1972 two years after it came out- my brother introduced them to me- also had Pictures at an Exhibition and Brain Salad Surgery
